Pelenwin and Victor are back on their feet and ready for anything, as are those behind them poised to receive an attack.

But none comes.

Those lowest on the stair peer around the corner into the darkness... their eyes drawn on by the faint sheen of light off the gory trail of blood left behind as Boris is dragged off into the gloom. They catch one last glimpse of the soles of his boots...

"He's a goner," mutters Victor, and spits.

Those remaining to the company retreat up the stair, following the pool of illumination about Olaf's lantern.

"Let's get some of this candles lit!" says Koch.

Pelenwin and Victor, at the rear, are now halfway up the stair.

Olaf, Ulric, Dieter and Wibert are in the ante-chamber before the double doors that lead into the Ogres' den.

Everyone else is on the stair between them.

What now?

The two sacks of coins and mace that Boris carried now lie on the floor in the gloom at the bottom of the stairs.

"Wibert," Ulric whispers, "any voices inside? If not let's get in there see what's left, grab it, and then get the hell out of this death trap."

Ulric readies the Anthracite Sufferance in his mind just in case something comes out of the doorway.

Wibert will pick up Boris's mace and wrap a cloth around the end and point it into the door, like a head looking in. With short sword in the other hand. Then he will get a light behid him so he can see and peek inside, looking of things that may fall on him or the sound of arrows or movement. If he hears/sees anything he will withdrawn fast.

Wibert can't see Boris or his mace. In fact he is carefully dealing with the Ogre-den door across a 30ft wide ante chamber. Across the other side of the ante-chamber is the top of the 60ft long, single-file flight of stairs which he ascended by.

His company members occupy the entrance to the stair, and indeed most of the stair passage, so that he cannot see down past the first two or three of them, let alone all the way to the bottom of the stair (where it is mostly dark in any case).

All Wibert knows is that somewhere down at the bottom of the stair there was some noise.

Wibert cannot locate an old helmet in the passage way. He briefly considers hacking the head off a rotting Ogre corpse a little way up the passage, but quickly decides against it. It would be far too messy, smelly and too heavy in any case.

So, with short sword in one hand and dagger in the other, Wibert peers through the gap between the double doors again. There is no sound nor movement within. If there was anything within, it would also certainly have heard the recent commotion on the stair just now.

Given the lack of any sound or movement, Wibert pries the heavy door open marginally more. Still there is no sign from within.

He pulls the door fully open so that the light from Olaf's lantern floods in.

Nothing.

It appears to be a large, dark, empty chamber. More light would certainly help see what is within.

OOC: Forget the mace, sorry.

"Light I need light, and stop that noise so I can hear. How is anyone supposed to sneak around here?", says Wibert.
