Anwyn presses on despite Taines's curiosity, her tiny Elvish feet making scarcely a sound ahead of the trudge of his Dwarfish boots.

The next pair of doors are half a dozen or so yards further down the passage. The one to the right appears properly barred, while the one to the left stands a hand-width ajar with no beam in sight.

As you illuminate more of the passage with your progress, you now see that the cramped passageway does not end at the far door, but rather it branches to the left and to the right...

Anwyn turns to the little party, waves Taines and Caine in front of the barred door to the right (and motioning to Ulric to stay put), readies her bow, and then gently kicks open the left door when they are ready.

Taines and Caine (who pushes past Ulric) move ahead of Anwyn in the passage before she tries the door.

Despite being ajar, it is heavy and stiff. It opens back into the passageway, but even Anwyn has to apply all of her considerable strength to move it. With a painful creak of its hinges and grinding of gravel beneath it, she slowly pulls the door wide to reveal the room beyond -- and simultaneously block egress back toward the stair, and Ulric from sight.

Inside is an awfully dark and wretched bastille not 3 yards wide nor high. On the far side of the stony cell, several pair of iron manacles dangle bleakly from chains attached to iron rings pegged to the ceiling. Aside from these cruel implements, the cell appears empty.

Anwyn and Caine advance a further dozen yards or so up to the intersection, while Taines and Ulric hang back with their lanterns.

The door directly ahead is different to those encountered thus far; it is slightly taller, has an iron door handle, and lacks a peep-trap. To the left and right both rouges spy similarly narrow passages that carry on unto darkness -- it is impossible to say whence they come without more light.

Anwyn notices a mark on the ground a few paces down the passage to the left and kneels to investigate. It appears to be newly dried blood. Apparently someone -- or something -- must have passed this way recently.

Meanwhile Caine detects a faint whiff of... something... unpleasant in the otherwise stale air. Is that the funk of carrion or something fouler?

But does it have a timber crossbar?

No, the door ahead is not designed to be barred.
