Helmut has to sheathe his greatsword in order to try the bridge, for it takes two hands upon the rope banisters to balance securely.
As he edges his way out over the ravine cautiously he finds that many of the deck palings are split, or missing, or of dubious integrity. He has to negotiate a safe footing with each and every step, while the whole of the bridge sways and sighs with his shifting weight and the wind that seems to run through the ravine like an invisible river...
...on the far side the bridge is anchored by four timber piles driven deep into the earth amid scattered boulders which, as on the near side, are a constant feature of the landscape. As Helmet draws cautiously nearer the far side, the persistent dinging of a distant bell comes to his attention over the droning of the wind. Seeking its source, he realises the bell is not distant, so much as it is tiny.
Amid the anchor works on the far side he spies a little tin bell affixed to the bridge by a cord that is stretched each time he takes a step, causing the little bell to rattle....
| Helmut is on the bridge, about two-thirds of the way across. Valron is at the near-side of the bridge. Ashtad and the gaggle are about 30 yards back from the near-side of the bridge, somewhat elevated over Valorn's position... |
