The Marksman (PC Class)

The Marksman

A marksman is a professional shooter, archer, or other dead-eye. He can be of any alignment or race, although non-human types will be limited as they are in the fighting class.

The marksman has the use of all arms and all armour as does a regular fighter, but does not make multiple attacks per round in melee combat. Moreover, he uses the cleric's attack matrix in melee combat. He retains the fighter's attack matrix for missile attacks with one specific type of missile weapon (which may be elected at 1st level or any level thereafter).

When employing his favoured type of missile weapon unencumbered the marksman has a number of advantages:

He shoots nimbly and accurately, being able to move and fire without penalty as does an elf. While standing his ground he can roll one missile attack as a 1st level fighter for each of his own hit die--all such attack rolls are considered to be long range and preclude the following:

If he has a missile poised and ready, he can loose it to short range (and ahead only) before the normal turn sequence plays out--even if he is then surprised or loses the initiative.

At 4th level he treats S/M/L range fire as S/M/M range, can hit monsters immune to normal missiles with mundane missiles, and suffers no attack penalty in aerial missile fire.

At 8th level he can fire into melee and only risk hitting friendly targets on an attack roll of exactly 19, and treats S/M/L range fire as S/S/M range.

Re: The Marksman (PC Class)

Nice work!

Maybe, in addition to the "to hit" bonus for DEX, grant this class +1 to damage rolls if they have 15 or better STR?

Re: The Marksman (PC Class)

I might perhaps limit the strength bonus to a marksman who uses hurled spears or hand-axes, say, as "compensation" for their limited range compared to a sling, bow, or crossbow.
