Orcs press toward the camp site in a riotous stampede! Those pouring down the north-east defile come all but freely into the camp at the top end of the haphazard line which the besieged defenders are trying desperately to form up. 11 feral monsters hack and hew at whatever targets present with grievous maces, swords and hatchets.

(Randomise targets 11d30; 1=Arbenbard, 2=Baraglin, 3=Dernfara, 4=Elindir, 5=Eohild, 6=Eremin, 7=Largo, 8=Norin, 9=Sili, 10=Telthalion, 11=Vestri, 12=Miodvitnir, 13=Ymir, 14=Burmon, 15=Hepti, 16=Hrok, 17=Oin, 18=Glorban, 19=Yori, 20=Dalain, 21=Balain, 22=Nat, 23=Hallam, 24=Einar, 25=Ran, 26=Sutherland, 27=Deorwyn, 28=Alf, 29-30=Horses; 13, 3, 10, 14, 24, 9, 5, 25, 24, 15, 17. And make attack rolls 11d20=4, 20, 12, 19, 6, 14, 11, 10, 15, 19, 7).

Orcish blades and cleavers ring fiercely off steel and hack awfully into flesh amid howls and roars and cries. Dernfara is struck a zealous blow (20!) for (4dd=3,4,5,2) 5 hit points, but the ranger is not beaten yet. Telthalion, Ran and Sili are all scarcely missed (19), but Burmon, Einar and Hepti are not so fortune, all suffering solid hits for (2dd=2,6 and 3,6 and 3,2) 6, 6 and 3 hit points respectively. By some miracle, none of them fall.

But simultaneously the two other prongs of the Orcish invasion crash into the already stressed line of fighters, and a further 9 Orcs deliver savage blows, as mace and blade clash together in the mountain night sending sparks a-flying.

(Randomise tragets 9d20; 1=Baraglin, 2=Dernfara, 3=Elindir, 4=Eremin, 5=Largo, 6=Sili, 7=Telthalion, 8=Hrok, 9=Oin, 10=Glorban, 11=Dalain,12=Nat, 13=Hallam, 14=Einar, 15=Ran, 16=Sutherland, 17=Alf, 18=Legandir, 19=Lomeluin, 20=Soval; 18, 7, 14, 4, 18, 11, 9, 15, 3. And make attack rolls 9,6,20, 16, 20, 16, 9, 20, 3. Three 20s!)

The Orc attack is brutal! Legandir, Telthalion, Eremin and Oin all dodge blows that might have ended them, but Einar the fighting-Man is smote for a second time in mere moments suffering a further (4dd=6,4,2,3) 6 hit points, and alas his skull is crushed in by an Orc most foul. Legandir dashes into the thickest fighting with Morfil a devil's blue fire, but he too is pierced from behind (20!) by a cunning Orc sneakin the fighting for (4dd=6,5,4,1) 6 hit points. Dalain is cracked a blow to the head for (2dd=1,6) 6 hit points, and Ran is gutted (20!) by a grim black pole axe for (4dd=4,4,5,2) 8 hit points and falls prone.

The surprise attack was most dastardly, and the battle is deadly in earnest, but a fighting company such as this is not so easily blunted, even in their night clothes! Lomeluin draws Andune, while Baraglin Banks the Hobbit shouts orders to form up as if he were Bullroarer himself!

Battle is given in return, with bright blades slashes and daggers stabbing fiercely, as the desperate line buckles, then rights again...

.

Dernfara and Soval (Orc Bane) hew mightily dashing the heads off an Orc apiece, while Telthalion the Elf surprisingly drives his blade through the gut of a third monster, dropping it dead in mid-stride. Baraglin, Elindir, Largo, Hrok, Dalain and Legandir all wound Orcs in the colossal melee, as do Einar and Ran before they are felled. Alas for Sili the Dwarf hero, for his mighty flail blows ding off Orcish mail wherever he turns ((2d20=7,7) both missed by 1 pip -- both would have been hits if he were wielding an axe).

FYI (damage rolls for PCs who hit Orcs):

Baraglin (1d20=18) (hits with shortsword, 2dd=2,3) 3 hit points.
Dernfara (1d20=17) (hits with sword, 2dd=4,4) 11 hit points, slays Orc.
Elindir (1d20=11) (hits with sword, 2dd=5,3) 5 hit points.
Largo (1d20=20!) (hits with dagger, 2dd=4,6) 6 hit points.
Telthalion (1d20=17) (hits with sword, 2dd=3,3) 6 hit points, slays Orc.
Hrok (1d20=11) (hits with axe, 2dd=2,5) 6 hit points.
Dalain (1d20=15) (hits, 2dd=1,5) 5 hit points.
Einar (1d20=18) (hits, 2dd=4,5) 5 hit points.
Ran (1d20=15) (hits, 2dd=2,1) 2 hit points.
Legandir (1d20=12) (hits with sword, 2dd=3,1) 5 hit points.
Soval (2d20=13,5) (hits with sword, 2dd=1,5) 8 hit points, slays Orc.

A quick summary of what just happened;

The Orcs at the north-east end of the valley are running amok amid the camp-site. Two further prongs of Orcs have been blunted against a line of bold fighting-Men.

Einar and Ran have just been slain in the fighting.

Dernfara, Burmon, Legandir, Dalain and Hepti have all just been wounded.

Meanwhile, a further three Orcs were slain, and a eight more wounded.

There might be a dozen of them in the camp yet, and a score or more fighting the line. It's too dark and too chaotic to be certain.

What now?

OOC: I think that means Soval killed an Orc not the other way around.

OOC: Well the round went so-so, not bad enough to feel like we need to run, not well enough to think we've got this. Soval lost two mercs, we downed 3 orcs but notice the wounded Orcs took some high damage. I think if we press on with a little luck next round we will see more go down.

Baraglin uses his size and speed to land a quick blow in the chaotic melee, stepping back for a moment to assess the raging battle. Hoping the line will hold Baraglin looks for any opportunity to back stab or at least land a blow with an engaged Orc, there by "helping" any of the fighters in the line. "Stand firm! The tide is turning, these Orcs will soon just be a Heroic tale over Tea and Biscuits!"

If he can see Legandir anywhere in this madness he calls to him; "You seek doom? It lies this way! If you would sell your life, do so for its full worth!"

To any other members of the company capable of bearing arms but not yet in the shield wall: "Follow me!"

And he charges the oncoming Orcs, the mallorn and green leaves on his shield gleaming in the moonlight, his elvish blade glittering like ice.

"LORIEN ENTULUVA!"

(O.O.C: The above heroics depend on whether he is satisfied Eohild is in no immediate danger. If leaving her would expose her to attack he will instead stand guard over her, cutting down any Orc that comes within reach of his blade.)

Any chance of that map, Ways, or is all still chaos and confusion?

My apologies, that is Soval has SLAIN the Orc he hit. I will clarify the original post.

If possible, Largo will attempt to finish the orc he struck last round. If not, he will strike whichever orc is closest by.

I'm not quite sure where he is but if he's not within the line, and can actually see where the line is, he'll make his way toward it while fighting.
