Gerar of Szil.

Your adventure begins.... now!

Otto Schosenboom always was a fool. You were not in the least bit surprised to hear that the Snorks had cornered him for various legal infringements, nor that he had lashed out clumsily and got himself hanged. You weren't even bothered to watch him swing.

What does concern you, however, is where the amateur demonist hid his research. He may have been a fool, but when it came to his secret art, he was necessarily paranoid. If the Traders' Concourse had learned what he was involved in, they never would have tolerated him. But none of that matters now. All that matters now is that you be the ultimate beneficiary of his secret ... research.

To this end you entered the Concourse on "regular business" while everyone else was at his execution, sneaked into the back rooms, and then the basements, and the sub-basements, and the lower cellars where you forced entry into Schosenboom's tiny store. By candle light you turned the place over in search of any clue.

Finally, you found the secret half-height panel behind his paltry desk, and the narrow black stair that descended into darkness from there. This must be the entry to Otto's private chantry... surely?

What now?

Grasping the candle in one hand, Gerar descends down the narrow stair. He steps carefully, lest he slip.

The stair is narrow and steep, but squarely made and Gerar descends quietly at good pace by the orange glow of his fluttering candle...

To find another cellar beneath the concourse which he'd never guessed existed. This one appears to be a long, stark chamber that traverses a gentle curve. It has an arched semi-circular ceiling -- as if it were the top half of a broad tube. The brickwork looks ancient, but safe enough...

Dimly seen in the vast shadows are other archways similar to the one by which Gerar has arrived. Perhaps there are four such others; it is difficult to see in the limited light. There is no sound, nor sign of anything else moving in this dark place.

It seems Schosenboom may have been braver than Gerar gave him credit for...

Gerar approaches the threshold of the nearest archway. He holds the candle in the darkness and examines his surroundings, his breath catching in his throat.

The cellar is broadly proportioned, though the ceilings and walls are one and the same feature, and are uncomfortably low nearest the floor due to the unbroken curve.

Gerar moves from his stair to the nearest arch -- being across the chamber and some 30ft to his right (facing into the space from his stair) -- his feeble candle complaining at the motion.

In doing so, Gerar notes with displeasure the manner in which his boots have contacted an unidentifiable but sticky substance underfoot. It is not strong, and nor does it impede him, but it stretches out ridiculously from the sole of his shoes as he strides across it...

Holding the candle close a moment, Gerar sees a long, meandering trail of the gum traversing the length of the chamber. What it might be is anyone's guess. Could Schosenboom have laid it as some kind of measure against intrusion? Or could some horror of the dark have merely wandered by?

He reaches the arch unimpeded and sees a short and low 5ft wide passage boring into the dark.

What now?

Before entering the dark passage, Gerar bends to examine the gum. He takes immense care lest the candle flame go out.

Gerar scrapes the stuff from his boots with the blade of his shortsword, but the d**nable stuff is like glue and he can't get rid of it entirely... it stretches from boot to blade and floor and all about. It is decidedly inconvenient!

Gerar mutters and huffs a few expletives and, when he has gotten rid of as much of the stuff as seems possible, he moves into the archway...

... a low, narrow passageway beckons. The stonework seems untouched by ages, as sound as if it were new yesterday. What is that..? A glimmer of some reflection at the far reach of his perception. Perhaps there is gold upon the floor ahead?
