The company return from the cellar via the narrow secret stair, and find that it is a little before noon on a cheery spring day.

The manse itself is strangely silent, given that it is devoid of staff (Ulric having previously ordered the goblins to take the day off).

Highbough shuffles off to his room to begin his study of the golem craftsman's journal, discretely inviting Ulric to join him if he so desires.

Mondes mutters something to the effect that his fellows should "Have fun watching Stinky...", referring of course to the sleeping dwarf (who looks paler and muddier than ever in the daylight), before heading upstairs to survey the gardens from a higher vantage.

Ulric examines the ring returned to him by his rats, and inspects it carefully by the light of the dining hall window, it appears to be a plain, steel band bearing ages of light scuffs and wear... they may have been an inscription once, but the ring is so worn its meaning is impossible to discern.

Shortly thereafter, Dorgan returns from his room upstairs and hands Ulric a vial of liquid, claiming the stuff might be useful for poisoning the centipede nest.

Josiane returns the Marrowstone to Dorgan with a smile and a curtsey, and the dwarf returns to his own chambers to study to mysterious stone.

What now?

Guntrum will seek some aid and carry the guore to his quarters and make him as comfortable as possible. He'll inspect the manacles in the light of day to see if there is some lock mechanism or catch to unbind them or for a good spot to try to wedge a crowbar as a lever to split them without injuring the creature. After that, he stands watch.

Gustave and the dual-headed Halfling start turning out the pantry for tea and, realising it is getting on toward midday, some lunch. From his look at the back garden, Desmond concluded that the cellar portal must open somewhere in the middle of the lawn -- though there is no obvious sign of it.

Meanwhile, Guntram and Josiane see the filthy sleeping dwarf to Pelenwin's ex-quarters and place him on the pallet. Where he continues to snore obliviously.

Guntram examines the manacle about the fellow's ankle, but finds it to be some the most flawless, impenetrable metalwork he has ever observed. There does not appear to be any mechanism for opening whatever.

Meanwhile, Highbough descends into an eager, trance-like state in his examination of the craftsman's journal. The text is a compelling account of half a life-time of experiments into the construction of automatons, culminating in a magnificent treatise on the construction of golems of various sorts. It will take Highbough some time to solve the meaning of all the theorems and diadems therein... but it shows great promise.
