(089) Moonlight Backtrack

Splaaasshhhh!

Zem and Fried are struggling in black water, choking and gasping, and thrashing for impossible air!

Karl wades into the misty water to drag the flailing aliens suddenly to the surface, where they heave in huge breaths of cold, night air amid debilitating fits of coughing. Leudigar can scarce make out what is happening, yet as he realises the aliens are not going to drown, the mist has rolled back enough for him to recognise Zem and Fried !

He blinks twice. Still them, coughing and spluttering, in a paltry pool.

Leudigar takes a step back, and Vvvwwwummph! everything... crystalises for him. It is night. On an undulating plain. There is a clear, starry sky overhead, and his fellows are wallowing in a modest rock pool that lies at the bottom of a broad depression...
Karl, Leudigar, Zem and Fried are here.

Welcome gentlemen. Your adventure continues... now.

Leudigar looks up at the stars and sighs in relief. Then he looks down at Karl pulling Zem and Freid to the shore.

"What'r you two doing in the water," he asks his friends. "And do try to keep the noise down. It appears we are now out on the plains, though which plains I do not yet know..."

Zem sputters and spits, "I reached for a hammer and I come up to find you. Not sure if I was cheated, but thanks for the hand."

"Magic!" Freid spits water coughing,"We came through the portal you did, but were in a room with a large pool of water and you two were no where to be found."

"This place looks real enough, but after what we've been through, who knows!"Freid wades out of the water and shakes his arms and legs trying to dry off a bit in the chill air.

He'll take an inventory of everything he has on himself once he is on dry land and has shaken and wiped as much of the cold water off himself as he can.

"So, Leudigar, do the stars tell you where we are?" Freid asks as he also looks up at the stars trying to orient himself, "I'm no expert, but from the constellations I might be able to find north...ur, if we find north and face it then we should travel to the...um, right?...to head back toward Manfried's Camp?"
I think I'm correct in that, but I'm not even as sure as Freid would be. ;)

Leudigar nods and looks up at the stars, hoping by the gods that the constellations he sees are not completely alien to him...
Ummm... I do believe North is right on the map, so... yes?

Fried observes ruefully that he--and his companions--are attired in their same old, grubby shirts, hose, and well worn boots. Each is equipped as he was in... wherever the strange place they recently visited was. Zem finds no trance of the wonderful smith's hammer he envied, but Zmort's Beard! His pack is heavy as ever it were.

Meanwhile, Leudigar examines the night sky. He is initially frustrated by patchy clouds, and the unexpected star shapes, and their general dimness, but eventually he realises that the whole of the sky has shifted; the season has turned. In which case, that should be the Trident constellation, though it hangs low in the sky, and so that must be the Bear star. With all this, Leudigar settles on a direction, and calls it north.
Forgive me if, in the interest of expediency, I have curtailed your otherworldly trials.

What now?

"Good enough for me," Karl mutters. "But which way do we need to go to get back to where we came from? I've gotten completely turned around."

"Well..." Leudigar replies hesitantly, "If this is the Ivory Wold, or the Wild Wood as we call it, then we are north of Ket and so we should head that way." He points at a bearing heading south.

"But a bigger concern of mine is that the Trident thrusts so low in the sky at Large Bear." He looks back at the others, "Apparently several months have passed since our capture by the elves; maybe even an entire season..."

"Magic!" Freid says with a spit,"It could be several years for all we know. I say don't worry about it until we get somewhere it might matter."

"Getting away from this place and back to civilization where we can trade in what little treasure we've retained for food, water, shelter, and some new remnants seems more important than when it is."
Fried says as he sets off in the direction Leudigar indicates.
