Caine and Anwyn both turn and flee the ruin, heading straight for the covering fire they hope the party will provide. They have not quite reached the surrounding heath as the Hobgoblins race from the breach to hurl spears at their retreating backs.
Hearing their call, Taines makes a sudden charge toward the ruin and his retreating fellows, meeting them half way.
The remainder of the party, prepared for exactly this, simultaneously loose their own battery of missiles -- the range being too great for Ulric to affect his enchantment, he plies his sling instead.
Fortunately for our pair of thieves, the Hobgoblins both throw poorly -- dazzled as they are in even these overcast conditions (1d20=8, 6 respectively). Their barbed spears dig harmlessly into the earth behind Caine and Anwyn's fleeing feet.
Mads and Olaf fire arrows from their ready short bows, while Victor, Dieter and Ulric cast stones from their slings. Rodrick lacks a missile weapons and can only stand and regard the uncanny sight of Taines dashing off as the barrage sails over his head toward the targets. (1d20 each; Mads=16, Olaf=14, Victor=11, Dieter=5, Ulric=14). With the foe advancing beyond the crumbling wall in their haste to exact revenge, Mads's well poised shot thuds into the breast of the enemy (1d6=2) for 2 hit points. Olaf's shot pierces the shield of his enemy -- but the remaining missiles strike only earth and stone. The hail of fire is enough to send both of the enemy scurrying back into the bailey barking in alarm...
