Orim watches the comings and goings from a nearby table, taking particular interest in the Dwarf and his retinue. He nurses an ale, at the same time lamenting the lightness of his purse. His ears perk at the mention of gold. He seizes the moment and moves to sit at Bogg's table, his helm tucked under his arm.

"Orim Copperhelm," he grunts and nods at Boggs and Chiron. "If we're talkin' about fightin' fer gold, count me in."

Chiron

The mage looks Orim over and nods silently. He then turns his attention back to Boggs.

'Tis well met then, this misfit company of Dwarfs and Men with scarcely two coins to rub together between them. Though Morin shrinks beneath a great hooded cloak, his great size cannot be missed; he is 6ft tall if he's an inch. As to the question of money, and where to get it; this does indeed weigh heavily upon everyone's minds...
Being that the city is under martial law, be aware that it is currently illegal to carry arms, or to wear armor in public. Of course, what it really means is it is illegal for Men to be armed. The Hobgoblin thugs policing the streets are well enough equipped.

You're relatively safe here in the Churchcroft, but even here openly displaying your war gear is making people nervous...

Chiron says I've heard tales of a pathway to goblin treasure discovered. Supposedly, the barkeep here knows the way. With this group of doughty adventurers and stout men-at-arms, I say we blaze that trail to gold ourselves. If we're all agreed, I'll see about obtaining a map. It would seem I've more silver coin than most at this juncture...

Assuming agreement from the others, Chiron withdraws to engage the bartender in conversation. He offers up a silver for information on the pathway to the Traders Concourse vault.

Chiron approaches the barkeep, who watches him suspiciously with every step of his approach. Before Chiron can even open his mouth the barkeep says coolly, "I know what ya think ye want, and the answer is no."

Before Chiron can begin to explain, he continues: "Do you think anyone mighta seen you lot with and all yer spears and mail on yer way over tonight, huh? Do you think anyone might be wonderin' what the lot of ya are about, huh?"

Before Chiron can answer, he barkeep exasperates: "It's martial law, Man; Foer Thuul's sake use some discretion! Cover that stuff up!"
Chiron (charisma 9) decides to do the negotiatin'... Why not?

The ref decides a reaction check is appropriate to determine how the grim barkeep responds to Chiron's advance: 2d6=5; oh dear.

Chiron

Uh, I just wanted a drink, is all.

Slinking back to his chair, Chiron says, Perhaps another one of you should speak with this one. He seems a tad unfriendly.
Morin, you and your 16 CHR are up next!

Morin wrote:"Wealth comes like a turtle, and runs away like a gazelle!"
"That's as may be," grunts Walfried. "I don't keep track of wealth's comings & goings. 'Tis a fickle creature, and deceitful."

He glances down at the few coins he was recently counting out of his purse.

"Still a man needs to eat."

He glances over at the slight ruckus with the barkeep, and the party of armed folk.

"Hm, well -- Almighty Thuul will provide."

He stands, gathering up his things, and nods to Morin.

"The catacombs is what I was thinking. No one will deny that's a dark place that needs light brought. Shall we see if we can join the expedition, if it ever gets off the ground?"

Mero finishes his work, bundles his equipment away into a roll of cloth and tucks it into his bag.

He approaches the barkeep, asking for a drink and a word. "I have recently returned from the fighting on the borderlands, where a great knight, my friend and mentor, fell in mortal combat. I should like to return a token of his to the resting place of his sires, but with Thuul's temple closed I have no access to the crypts. Perhaps you have a friend who knows a means of ingress." He presses his payment, with a generous tip, onto the bar.
Mero speaks to the bartender in Gothic. Mero hopes the bartender will be favorably inclined to a worshiper of Thuul, speaking in the tongue of men.

To Chiron, Boggs replies: "My men and I have no fear of sorcery. Any enemy of the goblins is a friend of mine."

To Orim Copperhelm he says: "Ah, good to see another down-on-his-luck dwarf. My mountain-name is Griútgarðr, and my travel-name is Boggs."

"Indeed! There is rumor this tavern man knows secret way to catacombs ... though, he seems picky about his silver ..."
