The intrepid company (less Dieter and Dorgan) huddle upon the platform, before the dwarf punches the pedestal button.

It offers some resistance before depressing smoothly about an inch, and giving a satisfying click.

There follows a moment's silence. Then comes a brief and distant rumbling that might be dragon yawning... or a bridge collapsing... who can tell? That cacophony is almost immediately overridden by a much more immediate whining, before a great gout of steam shoots out from beneath the platform with a sudden hiss. And then, with the cumbersome clanking of tortured machinery, the platform begins to rise! Jerkily at first it goes, before it begins to move more smoothly.

And within a minute it has whined its way right up to the cellar, where Dieter awaits. The rising platform fills the well-shaft entirely, excepting the small slip hole which is just large enough for a man to clamber up or down the ladder.

Dorgon is left in the darkness of the basement, below. He just just see the orange glow of the torch light above coming through the ladder slip to the side of the platform.

Now that they're on the second level (the area below the basement), Desmond nervously scans the centipede holes again, looking for any sign of activity.

"Now, talk about something being a concern below our house..." he adds.

Is the rope we used to get down there still in place and accessible? If not, she will be swift to hunt out another rope from a party member and lower it to her friend as swiftly as she may.

Yes, there is still a rope looped over the pedestal in the cellar, which is dangling over the lip of the well (just fitting between the well-wall and the platform), and into the basement below.

Dorgon could try the ladder, or else hand over hand up the rope. Or, if those above move the rope, he could use rope and ladder at the same time.

The circular "well" of the pit descend some 20ft, before opening out into another cavern below, which might itself have a ceiling height of some 10ft.

In the chamber below, a circular dais can dimly be seen, directly beneath the pit. Another pile of the wooden crates can be seen (from above) atop it.

The untrustworthy ladder runs all the way down the wall, to the floor below.

All is still and quiet.
"Magnificent," Ulric says after being raised up on the platform from the cavern below. "Now has anyone had a look at these?" Ulric asks pointing to the crates on the platform. Ulric begins to inspect the crates to see if they are similar to the ones in the cellar. "We may need a crowbar again."

Ulric looks up from the crates.

"Yes indeed Desmond. Leaving poisoned food down here is still my best suggestion."
