(083) Goblin Town

Parallel Company, your adventure starts... now.

Ket is an occupied town under martial law. The goblin army came down from the Hinterlands virtually unopposed, but that seems months ago. They swept any resistance aside rather as a insolent child might take the wings off a hapless fly. Not that there was much resistance from Ket; oh no. The goblins had planned it long and well, and had gradually taken majority control of the Traders' Concourse and The Watch in the years before; buying their way into influence with their inexhaustible goblin gold. When their army came, the gates were wide open and they marched right into the town square; right up to the bar of The Jolly Noose to quaff their victory drinks!

The months since then have been dark times for Men of Ket. Business continues, albeit under strict new regulations enforced by an overzealous goblin military. But the screws are tightening. The law seems more stacked against Men and toward Snorks with each passing day. May good folks have disappeared, or deserted. Others would too, if they weren't so afraid...

So Men have taken themselves underground. To the labyrinth of sewers, escape tunnels, secret stairs, and family vaults still undiscovered, or not yet policed by the goblins. Here, at least, Men can grumble and complain among themselves over their bitter fortunes. Why has Maine not come? they ask. Where are the Guardian Path templars when you need them? And where on Thuul's Green Earth, is that idiot Gottfried? The Lord Absent Himself, away for a year and a day on Thuul knows what ridiculous jaunt... while his fiefdom has been pulled from under him!

That's the tone of talk around The Churchcroft these days. Its a low and private underground tavern for Men and their friends--long as they're not Snorks--where good folk can get a bit o business done without Snork involvement. Tonight the rumor is that some lucky bugger found a tunnel right into the goblin vaults; right to all that goblin gold. Other folks are talking more serious-like of getting back some of what's been taken from them. All that stolen Trader wealth is stashed in the catacombs down there, and with most of the Traders dead or run out of Ket, well... who'd come looking for it?

Re: (083) Goblin Town

Parallel Company.

Let us assume you have smuggled yourselves and your goods here, to the Churchcroft. You have it on good authority the barkeep, a solid looking chap with suspicious eyes, will show you how to access to the Catacombs of Ket from his establishment. For a silver coin.

Meanwhile. Ket is a town under martial law and economic duress. All further food and supplies will cost double the list price until further notice.

Good luck, and may the dice be with you!

Chiron the Medium

Hands folded deep within the sleeves of his ocher brown robe, Chiron observes the crowd at the Churchcroft. He awaits his companions, a motley crew if ever there was one. Dwarves and elves adventuring with Men? Beneath a city of goblins and orcs, and giants! Inconceivable!

Still, there was gold to be had. And a city as old as Ket may yet yield some deeper secrets to a mage willing to suss them out.

Chiron sat silent, and observed.

The Red Baron wrote:As Mero and Sir Loherangrin rode back from a hard season's fighting at the frontier, laden with laurels and plunder, they were beset by goblins. Mero was awakened from daydreams of gold spurs to see his master fall from the saddle with black arrows sprouting from his chest. Mero rode hard with wolves on his tail, until his horse was spent, then stood on a hillock and broke his sword on a wolf's skull. Thus did Mero find himself lost and alone in the hinterlands.
Mero sits against the wall in a corner of the Churchcroft, nursing his wounds to the dim murmer of voices, and soothing his wounded pride with a small bready ale. He polishes the dented steel plates of his armor for the hundredth time, with a now dirty brown-red cloth that smells of blood and iron.

Talk of goblin gold catches Mero's ear - and a grudge kindles within him as he thinks of enacting a bit of well-deserved vengeance on the snorks by robbing them blind.

Re: (083) Goblin Town

Brother Walfried has claimed some space to himself somewhere & is seated, with his armor spread out before him, cleaning it meticulously. His war hammer leans against his thigh, and his shield against the wall. The former is sturdily-made, with a broad head on one side & a cruel spike on the other, with a sturdy oak shaft. The latter bears the sigil of St. Wilmod the Resolute: a mailed hand, fingers raised with the palm out.

While tending to his task with the ease of long practice, his mind is on the scant money in his purse, and whether a trip into the Catacombs is in order.

From time to time he raises his eyes to scan the room for likely comrades.

Re: (083) Goblin Town

Boggs is getting to know his new men (Werner, Klaus, Schlags, Anton, Erbert, and Rudler) by teaching them Dwarfish hand-games like odds-and-evens, slap hands, and thumb war. If any waitstaff approach, Boggs will allow his company to order only water. When they think he is not listening, the men grumble about their cheapskate new employer.

Re: (083) Goblin Town

Chiron approaches Boggs.

Good day to you, dwarf. I see you've accumulated a number of fighting-men. I dare say you've not enough to retake Ket. So I must confess to being curious as to your current plans for this small army.

Re: (083) Goblin Town

Boggs replies to Chiron: "We've just come from Manfred's Bastion. These men saw action at the Fall of Ket with the Bright Lion Company. The snorks are winning out there, in case you hadn't noticed. There's no hope, glory, or fortune for us out there on the battlefront. The goblins have picked the surrounding countryside clean of any spoils. The truth is, we're dirt poor, dead broke, busted. We thought, why not try our luck in the the cattycombs? We need gold and silver, and we're willing to fight for it."

Re: (083) Goblin Town

Chiron nods sagely.

I, too, need gold and silver. And I, too, am willing to fight for it. I am no pugilist or swordsman, but I have some small skill in, uh, natural philosophy.

He leans over and whispers to the dwarf, I mean sorcery. Assuming your Men aren't the superstitious types, I can be of some help to you.

Re: (083) Goblin Town

Morin the Hooded quietly enters the Churchcroft and crinkles his nose at the smell of these Men and their drink. He is shrouded in a charcoal-colored great cloak, and few notice him in the smoky gloom. His bright eyes briefly scan the room. He meets the gaze of Brother Walfried and quickly sizes him up as a man of faith, and deeds, and little coin.

He approaches Walfried's table and seats himself. With a sardonic smile he holds up his single silver piece between thumb and forefinger. "Wealth comes like a turtle, and runs away like a gazelle!"
