Freid also tries to open the door, but before he does he says, "Are you sure we came this way?"

"Yes. This is the way to the hydra's room."
Unless specific action is taken to prevent it, doors automatically close and must be re-opened when you come back to them. That's a btb rule that many DMs don't follow.

Re: (082) The Darkness Below

Fried gives the door a really hard shove, but Zem is right; it won't budge.

They make room for Leudigar, who takes a short run up and rams into it, hip and should, but it's really stuck fast. As is someone has barred it on the other side...
Door check 1d6=4. Leudigar 1d6=4. (That's three fours in a row folks).

Playing the game outlined in the 3LBBs can seem a whole different thing :)

"This IS the way out," Leudigar says in frustration.

He tries to open the door again...

"That didn't work for any of us. I doubt trying again will have a different result."says Fried, "I guess we'll have to find another way out. What we don't want to do is go further down."
May we have a recap of where we are, please? A map would be really helpful. :)

Re: (082) The Darkness Below

Doors aren't like locks, right? We can continue trying a door multiple times until it opens. This is definitely the way to the hydra room.

You're in a 40ft long passage that ends at this stuck door. If you turn about, you can only turn right, which is back toward the monk room.

Which player has made, and is carrying, this map? Probably not one of the fighter types, me thinks....

Re: (082) The Darkness Below

Leudigar half-heartedly tries the door again, but it's clearly jammed fast.

The original game states: "There can be up to three characters attempting to force open a door". So, if you haven't opened it with three attempts, it isn't going to open by hip and shoulder force alone. You'll need to impress it with something different...

Re: (082) The Darkness Below

Karl studies the door. Are the hinges on this side? Is there a gap between the door and the jamb, where perhaps a dagger could be inserted to lift some hypothetical bar on the other side?

This has generally been interpreted as "there can be up to three characters attempting to force open a door" at a time, not ever. At least in my experience.

If we ever get back to civilization, I'm going to buy a crowbar.

Re: (082) The Darkness Below

Yeah, I've thought about that at various times, but I can't really see three men shouldering a single door simultaneously. Just doesn't seem to be enough space to do that. In the end it should probably be specific to a dungeon, or even to each door, as to how "tough" it is to open. Fwiw, three shots in a row gives a 70% chance of opening. After that, I believe (from memory; haven't got the books handy) there's also mention of how long it should take a man or a giant to chop thru a held door with axes... beyond that you gotta get creative. Or use a knock spell.
