Dopey takes a look around for any remaining camouflage-cloaks discarded by Thick-Neck's band.

"We had better keep an eye out for Birnam Wood," says the Hobbet, surveying the surrounding shrubbery with suspicion.
waysoftheearth wrote:Everyone near jumps to turn about a see a body of soldiery flinging off camouflage-cloaks to spring from concealed positions along the ridge, closing to array themselves in a broad arc about the company's rear flank. By what sorcery a mixed score of Men and Hobgoblins managed to spring their ambush from so close, you'll never know.

"Who goes there?!" demands an imposing figure near the center of the line; a thickly built Man with green-brown and black painted over his skin, and twigs and grass still protruding from his mail and belts even as brown dust billows off his cloak.

Setting his spear on the ground and taking off his helmet, Wetzel wipes the sweat off his face and then limbers up his hunting bow. He takes a look over & down the cliff face if he can, trying to discern, if possible, whether the bodies they disposed of are still present, and whether there is any sign of movement on the hidden stair.

If such details are not visible from this position, he scrutinizes the surrounding foliage, and the battle site if he can see it from the company's present position, looking for any signs that the area has been disturbed since their departure. Nodding in response to Dopey's comment, he's very wary of the trees and shrubs.

Leudigar takes his time surveying the area, looking for any possible traps or ambushes. If he finds none, he offers to head up the trail to confirm the hidden staircase is still secured.

"You lot stay here, keep sharp. I'll make sure the hidden staircase is clear. If it is, I suggest we use that to get down to the valley and enter the goblin fortress that way. Chances are better they do not know we are aware of it and won't be expecting us that direction."

A surveillance of the area is undertaken, and soon enough Dopey the Hobbet locates the tatters of a discarded cloak, and this leads to the discovery of the prior battle site. There is no sign of any bodies on the valley floor below, though Wetzel distinctly recalls the awful angles they lay tangled in two weeks earlier.

It hardly takes Leudigar's tracking skills for the company to realise the battle site has been swept and picked clean by somebody else since your last visit here. The signs are long cold, however, and if anyone had returned here more recently, they have made an accomplished effort of concealing their passage...

Leudigar then opens the passage to the hidden stairwell and makes sure it is safe before going back to get the others.

He advises them to move low and single file and quiet in order to avoid drawing any attention to themselves as he leads them to the staircase. As soon as it is apparent they are all safely there, he begins heading down, cautiously making his way to the valley below.

The Herald follows Leudigar down the narrow stair.

Dopey examine the camouflage cloak to determine whether it is still serviceable.

"Is it possible to discern my presence?" asks the hobbet, pulling the tarp over himself and pressing himself flat on the ground.

Wetzel straps his hunting bow to his back again, refastens his Hobgoblin helm, and takes up his spear and shield.

He takes his place in the column as they head down the stair.

Freid follows along with the others whispering to Dopey, "Is this where you had your fight last time?"

Zax hefts his ice axe and shuffles in behind Leudigar and The Herald.
