By the flickering torch light, Dopey sees some dubious Hobgoblin scrawl, and some rather obscene looking sketches--apparently the gateman was wont to doodle while he waited. His spectacles--dainty, gold rimmed things--are fortunately unharmed. Unlike his shirt and waistcoat, which are unspeakably soiled with spattered brain and black-gore. Dopey notes, as he purloins the hobgoblin eye-wear, the buckles on the fellow's black shoes were rather nicely polished.

Meanwhile The Herald, Fried and Wetzel move quickly to the steel grate; which turns out to be a floor-to-ceiling iron gate rather than a portcullis. It looks simply enough to unlatch--an iron pin is lifted, freeing up the portal-door to swing inward. On the inside of the gate there is a double-fist sized bell hanging on the wall. A wire runs down the wall, and along the floor to a pedal at the foot of the gateman's desk...

Through the foot-wide gaps between the bars our company can see long shadows jumping intermittently of the curved passage wall, and hear echoes of rough laughing or shouting at a distance. More torches illuminate the passage...

"Not a scratch too hasty, eh god-hugger" says Zax, suddenly at The Heralds elbow, eyeing the wire. With a flick of his stubby arm he unhitches a throwing axe from his back and severs the unruly link before any of the long-legs get their gangly limbs entangled in it.

Once he has the room to do so, Leudigar enters the room and takes in the surroundings. He likewise examines the gateman. Following the wire to the bell on the other side of the gate, he cuts a strip of fabric from the dead hob's outfit and ties off the clacker on the alarm bell so it doesn't make any incidental noise while they are there.

The Herald grimly nods at Zax and smiles approvingly at Leudigar's trick with the bell.

Let's have a look at that ledger and that desk, and then let's be on our way. Anyone here read Hobbo?

The cleric stops a moment and rubs his chin.

Or mayhap this is a good place for an ambush. We lay some oil on the floor, tie a rope to the gate, ring the bell, wait for the hobs to run in, pull the rope and light the oil. What do you fellows think? No point getting into another stand-up fight. The last one didn't go as well as Thuul would have liked.

Arian looks impassively at the dead hobgoblin, gives the corpse a poke with her spear just to be on the safe side, then turns her attention to guarding the party's rear.

Zem listens to the Herald, "bah half that plan is right. Let's set up a trap we can trip if we need to on the way out. Let go explore while they don;t know we are here. Now how's this thing work"

Zem proceeds to check out the Iron Gate.
If the latch is on the warden side and it swing in, doesn't that mean we can lock anyone on the other side?

Laying his torch aside, the hobbet produces a blade from his belt and stoops to deftly remove the Gatekeeper's shoe buckles (being very careful, lest he should accidentally disturb the foot pedal).

Leudigar plucks the hobgoblin's gold-rimmed spectacles off his face and slips them into his pack after carefully wrapping them in a bit of non-gore covered fabric from the hobgoblin's outfit - maybe some of its cloak if that is available.

Zax severs the wire with his hand-axe, and an impressive thunk.

Leudigar observes that Dopey has already swiped the spectacles, then proceeds to tear a strip off the slain gateman's sleeve, then reaches through the bars to muffle the suspended bell.

Zem immediately realises the gate pin can be operated most simply from either side, by reaching through the bars. 'tis a little tall for dwarfs, but not out of reach.

Dopey cuts the hobgoblin shoe buckles free with his dagger and adds them to his collection.

Meanwhile Brother Herald ruminates upon the possibility of an ambush here. It would be likely be a crowded affair, with almost a dozen people already in the narrow room...
What now?
