The wide door of the Plough and Furrow is thrown wide, and Dorgan the Dwarf, Josiane the Vagabond Knight, and Percy and Mads (enterprising Men themselves) stride purposefully in.

Outside dusk approaches and there is already a chill upon the air. Inside the broad common room looks uncommonly inviting. There is a crackling blaze upon the hearth, and the row of four long tables are half filled, mostly with farm folk at their evening drinks, meals and friendly gossip.

A pair of huge, filthy armoured Men sit at the table nearest the great bar, drinking from wooden tankards with gusto and working through the enormous platter of sandwiches before them.

(Dieter and Koch, these are you two).

Josiane eyes the giant warriors with curiosity. To find two such men in a haunt of common farming folk just when her company's need is for such... Surely this is a sign?

But she has had little to do with mercenaries or their hiring. She turns to Dorgan; "How should we proceed?" she whispers anxiously.

Dorgan looks at the two hulking sandwich eaters and smiles. "If they eat all that in one sittin', we will nae have ta pay 'em fer food fer a week!"

Then, more seriously, "The working Man has no love fer Snorks. Let that be our play."

The dwarf strides boldly over to the two steel-plated Men. "Hail and well met, gents. If'n ya got time to listen between bites, my friends and I have a bizness deal ta propose ta ya. Whatta ya say?"

A brief frown clouds Josiane's face at Dorgan's use of the term 'Snork.' She dislikes racial slurs, even when it comes to creatures of such dubious reputation as Goblins. "But my friend is a Dwarf," she tells herself; "His people have little cause to love Goblin-kind if the old tales tell true. I have no right to rush to judgement."

She turns to Mads; "Good Mads, perhaps you might put the coins that remain in that purse to use and purchase drinks for ourselves and our new friends?" she whispers; "A show of goodwill may smooth proceedings."

She follows Dorgan across to the two warriors. "A good evening, gentlemen" she offers up, a little shyly; "Thuul's blessing unto you both."

Koch, the younger of the two fighting-Men, looks up with a mouthful of sandwich then swallows a great lump of bread an ham.

"Greetings master Dwarf," he says when he is able, then nods to the others as well, "We've just returned from a troubled venture and our spirits are high." and so is the pong on the pair of them, "Tell us your tale, while we eat!"

Percy and also Mads more cautiously, greet the smelly pair, noting the many dings, dents and notches upon their arms and armour, and then take up seats themselves.

"Master barkeep, bring us ale!" orders Percy the marksman. He feels right at home with the fighting-Men, and intends to celebrate his own recent survival.

Within a minute Albert bobs along to plonk six more of the great wooden tankards upon the table, then hurries off to serve his other customers.

Upon arriving, Olaf wastes no time opening the door to The Plough and Furrow with his free hand. Stepping inside he moves to the side to allow the others behind him to file inside.

Olaf looks around and spies Dieter and Kosh at a table piled high with sandwiches. A man that looks suspiciously like his, now dead, friend Mads standing next to their table with a dwarf, a crossbowman and a woman dressed as a warrior.

"There are our friends." Olaf says adding with a grin, "And I spy Albert behind the bar."

"Raising his voice he calls out, "Good Albert welcome a gaggle of thirsty and hungry explorers back from the wilds. We could all use a bath, a bed, food and drink."

"Hey, Dieter!" Olaf calls out, "Are some of those sandwiches for me, or do you and Kosh intend to eat 'em all!"

"Ah... yes. Ale. Good," says Josiane, as the great foaming jack of ale lands on the table in front of her.

She is not a great drinker, as a rule. Indeed, the last time she drank ale in any quantity was the last time she encountered mercenaries in a tavern far from these Hinterlands. They seemed friendly enough. Indeed, they were most eager for her to consume as much ale as she could and it seemed ill manners to refuse. But her foster-father Sir Jehan ordered her in the sternest terms to attend to the horses, (which she unnaccountabily did with less than her usual skill to her self-admonishment), while instructing her to study her scripture, with particular reference to the teachings of Saint Winifred the Chaste. He commenced a most animated (and apparently furniture-breaking) conversation with the sell-swords in question.

Strange are the ways of the Knight-Errant. She sips delicately at her flagon and tries not to start giggling childishly as before...

"Bring Ale! And keep bringing it!" growls Victor as he sits down with a clatter and a dust cloud.

The company sit themselves down with a great ruckus, and dump their heavy sacks, packs and gear, and a generous quantity of drinks begin to arrive amid laughter and friendly conversation.

Gustave re-enters the Plough with a deep sigh, anticipating the gentle caress of a warm bath and sanctity of a cushy bed.

He plonks his sack on the table and plonks himself next to Dieter and Koch, resuming work on his pint, his cigar, alas, now long spent.

It is only after taking a long draught, that he notices that the others at the table seem to be engaging in a conversation of sorts with some newcomers. An ugly fat dwarf and...a lady...

He is suddenly very aware of just how rancid his fellows (and no doubt he himself) smell, not to mention the cloying wads of mud and blood that still hang from unkempt beards, holed mail and fetid leather.

He puts on his best grin (and it is indeed a good one), and stands again, "You must introduce me to your new friends, my dear Koch", he says, then to the newcomers, "I must appologise for my comrades lack of etiquette - and our appearance", he says, extending his hand, "but we are just from the wilds and earnestly in need of a good bath"

"My name is Gustave, and these men are Koch, and Dieter, and you might be...", he finishes, turning his attention to the armoured lady, while still shaking the hand of the dwarf.
