"Try some of this," rasps Ulric from the column, passing a half-full skin of lantern oil up toward Desmond/Mondes, his lantern swinging awkwardly as he does so...

"Hey Desmond maybe we should have oiled you to help you slide through the bars", jests Ashtad. "I have an oil flask also if you need it to get back quickly", offers Ashtad.

Desmond takes the proffered skin of oil from the Firestarter and uses it judiciously to try and lubricate the mechanism and gate tracks; then he attempts to turn the wench that raises the portcullis.

Which the ancient chains oiled to Desmond/Mondes' satisfaction, the stout little Hobbet tests his arm on the decrepid mechanism, but struggle and strain though he might it is too stubborn for him to lift. Not even Mondes' profuse swearing will shift it.
Demond gets a force doors check to raise the portcullis: 1d6=5 doh! If only he had the strength and leverage of a Man!

Meanwhile, the ref throws an idle encounter check... 1d6=?

"Good try Desmond/Mondes, but you need more of us to aid you, if only we could fit through the bars. Do any of us have any magic that would say meld the bars", Ashtad asks around the company.

"Armando is there anything to that flagstone you are looking at, that may aid us?", asks Ashtad.

"Maybe, but let's try something else, first. Dieter, your rope, please," Desmond says, returning to the portcullis.

Once he has the rope, he will see if he can attach the rope to the lever or gear that needs to be moved to pull the gate. If he can do that, then he will keep the rope taut as he draws it back to the others, so that Dieter and Olaf can help as Desmond gives it a second try.

Dieter will reluctantly give him the free end of his loyal rope (keeping the end with the grappling hook).

"Now you'll stay there and untie this when we're done, see?" Dieter says.

Desmond chuckles, "We're not going anywhere down here by ourselves, Dieter. It's not been long enough for us to forget that lesson yet." He winks and goes back to trying to rig up the rope so the humans can assist him.

Looking at what Desmond is trying, Olaf asks, "Didn't somebody just say we have several vials of acid?" We could put along one of the bars to weaken it then try to break or bend it out of the way, so more of us could join you on the other side couldn't we?"

Desmond nods in agreement, "If this doesn't work, then we can try some of the acid. But I'd rather try this first."
