(074) Ye Nether World

Here be the labyrinthine nether worlds below the red desert.

Desmond/Mondes, Detier, Olaf, Ulric, Josiane, Ashtad, Armando, Torben, and Helmut are all here, all running to make the relative safety of the broad, columned stone chamber before the deluge of red-sand swallows them up.

Desmond/Mondes does a quick check of the columns as his comrades rush into the place; they are a series of 8ft broad, squareish pilons that support the stone ceiling via a series of inverted-V-shaped arches at 20ft intervals, rough-hewn from an alien red-brow rock. They seem purely functional and undecorated, but there is little time for that. As the sand pours into the chamber behind our heroes, the red-light of the outside world is fading fast! If this continues (and there is no indication it will not), it will soon be pitch dark!
Since the giant desert-worm is now more than a full move away and the players are out of sight, the referee first checks to determine whether the desert worm will seek to re-engage, treating it as a pursuit with the players having gone around a corner or through a door. 1d6=1, so no pursuit. The worm's brain is too small and out of sight is apparently as good as out of mind...

Welcome, then, to the Underworld.

What now?

"Someone please tell me they have a light..." Desmond pleads quietly, looking around for Wen and his floating candles.

"Wait. Where are the elves??"

Armando fishes a tinderbox from a vest pocket, and then casts about for his lantern — which he suddenly remembers having been fished out of the Wight Pit by his companions. He sets to lighting it once he's found a safe spot, but goodness only knows what remains of the lamp oil ...

Josiane takes in the company's new surroundings with an assured calm their dire situation hardly merits.

"Very well. Our priority must be attending to our wounded. Let us endeavour to find a place where we can do so. Scouts to the fore, swords to the front and rear. Not you for once, my friend," she adds to Dieter before he gets any ideas in his stubborn head about leading the charge.

"It may be that our changed circumstances actually play in our favour. If word of our arrival has reached the enemy they will be expecting an attack from above and will lay their plans accordingly. These tunnels may enable us to take them unawares. Highbough and Wen will, I suspect, make for the fortress should they evade the worms. Let us hope to rendezvous with them there."

She offers up a silent prayer for the safety of the two elves then attempts to orientate herself as best she may after their tumble into the abyss. Does she have any idea in which direction the fortress that is their objective lies?

Dieter looks all around these chambers, particularly once we're past the encroaching sand. Do they give the impression of having been unused for ages, or does this appear to be a reasonable architectural response to the surface conditions?
(I.e.; are we in a dungeon that may have been forgotten, or are we in somebody's cellar?)

Desmond nods gratefully as Armando lights his lantern. "Everyone check your bags for lamp oil or torches, in case we need it. Regardless, we should make haste after a brief rest. At least we don't have to shout over that howling wind anymore, nor bake in the fiery sun..."

With a light source procured, Desmond volunteers to take watch while Josiane tends to Dieter's wounds. He, too, tries to orient himself of the direction the tunnel leads.

"Looks like we have two choices. This nice, open tunnel with the proper roof or that smaller passage to the left there, what seems to be going down a bit."

Olaf searches for torches, lantern and oil. He wishes he had that magical torch, but he thinks the Sisters of Mercy took that back when he was first being treated by them.

"Anybody got preference which way to go?" Olaf asks, "I'd say take the broad tunnel as it is more likely to lead to the next fortress."

Armando looks around for carvings, writing, or any other markings on the surroundings that might indicate their provenance.

"First things first..."

If there is no sign of immediate danger and others are happy to keep watch, Josiane will set about casting The Supplication of Medicant Requite on Dieter's wounds.

If this is achieved without incident she will then cast her gaze thoughtfully over the two possible directions of travel indicated by Desmond, reaching as she does so for her Fated Coin...

Ashtad will stand guard while Dieter receives healing. While Ashtad waits she uses her huntsman skills to retrace her steps from the ship to here to determine the direction of the fortress they should move towards.
"If we need more light I have some torches", smiles Ashtad to those comrades-in-arms around her.
What direction does Ashtad determine the fortress? Is there enough light to see by in here, with Olaf's torch and Armando's lantern?
