Re: (073) Wind and Sand

I think having a look around is worth the slight risk of being spotted. Would Wen agree?

It has crossed Highbough's mind that getting himself (but not Wen) captured might not be the end of the world. A valuable prisoner might hope for enough food and drink to sustain life, more than the desert can promise. And what better opportunity to cast Sixth Sense than deep within the enemy's fortress?

The dire consequence of his capture however would be the magic items falling into enemy hands. If capture is imminent then Highough would try to buy time for Wen to escape with these items and continue the mission.

Does Wen have any interest in giving the ancient great mace a swing? If we are about to die in the desert then it seems a waste to leave its powers untested. But on the other hand we should be wary that it might be cursed or chaotic. I recently realized that Warlocks are not proficient with maces, so Highbough has no use for it and already has a cool magic weapon.

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

So, what now? Continue the search at the stealthy, dune level? Or risk some high leaping survellience of the local area?

Remember that in Hinterlands, any figure can use any weapon as a normal man. A player-type can progress to the heroic attack matrix (and beyond) with his class specific weapons.

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

Having no choice Wen just keeps wandering around trying to find his way out, I assume whatever logic can be applied to the search is being applied... But Highbough said he used his powers to jump into the air. I am not currently picking up the mace hoping instead to shoot something long before that becomes need

Yes, he did... I just wasn't sure he hadn't changed his mind in his last OOC post. Unless Mush posts otherwise shortly I will assume his last IC post stands.

Highbough will leap as high as the planet's gravity permits, to have a look around and hopefully spot some familiar landmark.

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

The old Elf leaps heavenward--The Cloak of Elemental Night dashing against his wire frame in the sandstorm, a black pennant. As he soars to a 50ft apex his parched and squinting eyes doth skim the sandy miles laid out below him, the dunes creeping eternally onward like migrating sand worms whipped by the wind. Alas, there's no sign of the worm canyons nor the skiff's hull. But as his descent gathers its momentum, Highbough's eye chances across a flat curve too uniform to be natural. Even far off and half-buried, it can only be The Ring, bless it!

As he thumps down onto in the sandy gale next to Wen, Highbough has already calculated his target must lie about an eighth-mile off, veering hard to his left. How they managed to drift so far off course in this blighted desert, he will never know.

Both our Elves are aware of their thirst, but their water skins are spent...
The ref decides that a giant leap over the dunes doubles Highbough's chance of spotting his mark in the usual fashion of Elves actively searching; 1d6=3, ah! On the other hand, he also doubles the chance of attracting attention to himself this turn; 1d6=4, so nothing. Has their run of ill-fortune turned..?

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

"Not bad, Young Lleuad-Wen, you judged the correct distance, but veered off a little to the right," Highbough calmly instructs his pupil. "The Ring is only an eighth-mile in this direction. What do you say we return to the ring and, from there, retrace our steps to the crash site? I'm sure the humans did not survive, but perhaps one of them had the courtesy to drop a water skin in the sand for us just before they were swallowed whole."

Wen smiles at the news, wipes his brow and sets off in the direction of the portal.

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

Highbough and Wen march doggedly across the red dunes, two tiny figures under a vast purple sky. Their boot sink into the swirling sand, and exposed skin is constantly lashed by the hot wind with its ever-present load of tiny silica-shards. Their throats are parched for want of a drop of water even before they set out, and it is a laborious quarter-hour march before the pair of them finally crest one last dune, and amble down the slope into the ring crater amid a deluge of sliding sand.

At last they reach the half-burried Ring in the centre of the dune-crater; both are aware of their thirst...
What now gentlemen?

Wen shades his eyes again and looks around the open desert. "We yet live, purple worms, flying ships, and endless waterless wastelands, this place is truly awful. I see no signs of the others and I do now know how long we can stay."
