Re: (073) Wind and Sand

It is only because of his glance back at Josiane that Helmut notes the desperate plea in her eyes, not hearing her shout over the raging wind. He checks his charge and moves to her side to determine the cause for concern, keeping one eye on the foe as he does (and in doing so catches a glimpse of a crazy-eyed warrior leaping an impossible height from the broken vessel).

As a 5th level cleric, Josiane's spell will affect two normal weapons, so Helmut's and her own. There is no range or area of effect specified in the rather brief description so let's assume it's similar to the Bless spell which has 6" range and affects a 6" diameter.

"THAT TEARS IT!", Olaf shouts then with shield up and sword out, moves in on the air elemental doing a slash through it with his sword.

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

Having an arrow ready on the string Ashtad reflexively lets fly her missile, but it is dashed harmlessly aside in the battering wind. Olaf, Wen, and Highbough all opt to melee the elemental, jumping onto the stricken deck to reach it...

Highbough strides into the contest--the Cloak of Element Night snapping fiercing behind him-to find himself ideally positioned and thrusts The Ire Spear into the belly of the whirlwind and is sure he connects. Dieter bounds mightily into the sandstorm so that he drops onto the opponent almost from above, his hand veritably guided toward the target by the magic sword but even this fantastic effort is thwarted by the thrashing sand and wind. Olaf and Wen, on the deck now, lunge and slash half-blinded by lashing sand, and likewise their attacks are battered aside in the terrible wind, but at least they are not punched by the elemental themselves.

Meanwhile Ashtad continues to trust her eye and looses a volley of missiles into the wild wind, but it is hopeless! Her arrows are flung away, tumbling madly sideways and ever away from the spirit of the air! Behind all this, Josiane brings a measure of Thuul's Grace to this blasted place to temporailry dwell in Helmut's and her own blade that they might challenge this infernal monster, and Desmond scurries out to the flank of the combat to retrieve his sword which was flung wide and stands upright in the sand...
A second turn of combat ensues.

Having an arrow notched Ashtad (the Marksman) fires into melee prior to determination of initiative; 1d20=12 @+1-4 (would hit AC 9); a miss. The die roll is even so she doesn't risk hitting a friend.

The elemental is 8ft tall, so has man-like reach. Highbough will therefore attack first with his spear, then an initiative check will determined order of the remaining attacks, 1d6; Olaf=3, Dieter=6+1, Wen=2, Elemental=1+1. So Highbough, Deiter, Olaf, then Wen+Elemental simultaneously.

Attack rolls 1d20...
Highbough=19+1-2 (would hit AC 2) hits, 1d6=3 hp damage;
Dieter=6+2+3-2 (would hit AC 7) miss;
Olaf=10@-2 (would hit AC 8) miss;
Wen=5@-2 (wouldn't hit AC 9) miss;
Elemental=8 (would hit AC 5), ref dices to see who is attacked (1-2=Highbough, 3-4=Olaf, 5-6=Wen, 7-8=Dieter) 1d8=6, so it's Wen (leather+shield+helm=AC 4) miss by 1 pip.

Ashtad has not moved so fires a second volley; 1d20=4+1-4, even die doesn't risk hitting friends, miss; 1d6=4 so a total of 6 arrows have been spent this turn.

Josiane's spell is completed; Helmut's and her own blade are now blessed.

Desmond recovers his sword, about 50ft away.

Now taking your orders for the third turn of combat...

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

Wen feels the creatures stroke pass uncomfortable close, he shouts out in Elven "By the will of the Forest Mother you shall not destroy that which must be! Away with your untamed force, to your desert return!" All the while trying to land a telling blow on the Elemental.
Come on dice don't fail me now!

Olaf grunts as he thrusts and slashes with his sword. He keeps his shield up to protect his eyes from the blinding sand.

"Be gone! Leave us be Foul Wind!", Olaf shouts at the elemental.

At this point, where is the battle action taking place? On the deck of the ship? Or now in front of the ship?

Combat turns are a minute long, so quite a bit of movement is possible during a turn. Let's assume the melee is taking place within a 60ft circle centered around the ship. Also, since the elemental is air-borne, the players can gain a bit of free altitude by being on the deck, but players can also jump quite high (ten times normal) without undue effort...

Re: (073) Wind and Sand

"ASHTAD! CEASE FIRING! YOUR ARROWS ARE MORE DANGER TO US THAN TO THE BEAST IN THIS WIND!"

Seeing their blades now glowing with the holy radiance of Almighty Thuul's blessing, Josiane swallows hard, nods to Helmut and races forward to engage the monster.

"Lady, guide my arm..."
