"We're unequipped and undermanned for such a venture," says Josiane in response to Dorgan's suggestion of a second assault on the warehouse; "It is well we acted when we did. If we had encountered that thing at night time..." She shudders at the thought and reaches into her purse to finger her fated coin gratefully.

"But we cannot leave until we know these people are in no immediate danger. Let us lend a hand to the dousing of the flames and make sure the surrounding buildings are safe. Then we should look to the temple. There are certain provisions we shall need."

"And our numbers are too few for this task. We need allies..."

"Whoa now, miss High and Mighty," says Mads pragmatically, "I believe our appointed task has been seen to adequately; whatever business it is that Grumolg has here will be set back a step or two by this," he sweeps his hand toward the smoking building.

"No need to stick our necks out any further than we need to, eh?" agrees Percy.

But Josiane has already made up her mind, and works her way into the fire-fighting line. Percy and Mads find pales full of water being thrust into their own hands as they followed her, talking.

And soon enough the whole of the foursome are on the line, helping to douse the flames before they get out of control...

"If you wish to take yourselves elsewhere, I quite understand," Josiane says quietly to her reluctant companions; "I, however, have a code to uphold."

And she gets on with the passing of buckets...

Dorgan has a foul look upon his face but he accedes to the Lady's request and grabs a bucket with the rest.

"Guess it can't hurt to wait around and see what sorta roaches come scurrying outta this place..." he grumbles.

It turns out that the hauling of pales full o' water is hard labour, and it seems to go on and on and on. In fact, it does. After ten minutes of haulin' the fire appears to be getting out of control!

The shouting and tempo increases to a back splitting pitch, and the whole of the team is enveloped in choking smoke. After another ten minutes of this the fire-fighters seem to be making headway, and within ten minutes more, they have the fire under control.

A cheer goes up from the grimy, char-smudged fire-fighters, and Josiane, Mads, Percy and Dorgan all take a well deserved break. They are all royally knackered.

The four sit aside in the smokey alley and observe the aftermath for a moment as they catch their breath.

The front part of Grumolg's warehouse is completely burned away, and the side wall and roof around where the pavilion once stood is a gutted wreckage. The neighbouring warehouses suffered only slight burn damage, and the entire area seems half flooded.

Scores of grimy citizens are likewise standing around gawking.

What now?

If there is no sign of imminent danger, Josiane is happy her duty here is done for the present.

Two and a half hours to nightfall. How far is it to the temple of Thuul?

Dorgan looks thoughtfully at the burned out warehouse.

"Where's the constable in this rat-hole of a city? Maybe he can take a look around and find some'a them dead bodies that wuz walkin' around."

"Remember how powerful the goblins are in this city, my friend," counsels Josiane; "And Grumolg, by the sound of it is one of the most powerful of all. I fear the law will be of little aid to us. Indeed, it may prove to be quite the opposite. And besides, common soldiers are no match for what lurks beneath that place." She sighs; "It seems my Lady has appointed this task to us, if you are all willing."

She looks at the sky again anxiously.

"The afternoon wanes. We must move on. Things may go ill for us if we are caught outdoors this night...."

Josiane will indeed lead on. Her destination is the Temple of Thuul if she is happy she can reach it in good time before nightfall.

On the way she casts a keen eye over the stalls of any grocers or street vendors she may pass. She is particularly looking for garlic...
