Wibert draws a torch from his pack of chattels, and works at striking a flame to the pitch, as the ruckus continues outside. Eventually a spark takes hold, and a flames bursts forth.

The company turns right, and does indeed find a musty, narrow stair which descends into the dungeons below and rises to the roof top above. There is a damp and foul smell in the air...

Gentlemen, it will be single file upon the stair. I will need a marching order.

Highbough's piercing squeal echoes down the stairwell, echoes but once, and then there is a pregnant silence...
