Re: (064) Rustics & Heretics

"Bring them along" calls Helmut to the woman who calls herself Ashtad, "We can't leave them here."

He then sheaths his sword and ventures out onto the bridge, keeping a wary eye on possible points of ambush. "If Thuul sees me across dwarf, follow my lead."

Re: (064) Rustics & Heretics

Helmut has to sheathe his greatsword in order to try the bridge, for it takes two hands upon the rope banisters to balance securely.

As he edges his way out over the ravine cautiously he finds that many of the deck palings are split, or missing, or of dubious integrity. He has to negotiate a safe footing with each and every step, while the whole of the bridge sways and sighs with his shifting weight and the wind that seems to run through the ravine like an invisible river...

...on the far side the bridge is anchored by four timber piles driven deep into the earth amid scattered boulders which, as on the near side, are a constant feature of the landscape. As Helmet draws cautiously nearer the far side, the persistent dinging of a distant bell comes to his attention over the droning of the wind. Seeking its source, he realises the bell is not distant, so much as it is tiny.

Amid the anchor works on the far side he spies a little tin bell affixed to the bridge by a cord that is stretched each time he takes a step, causing the little bell to rattle....

| Helmut is on the bridge, about two-thirds of the way across. Valron is at the near-side of the bridge. Ashtad and the gaggle are about 30 yards back from the near-side of the bridge, somewhat elevated over Valorn's position... |

"In the name of Thuul...", curses Helmut, as the tiny trinket of his undoing tingles innocently in the wind.

He debates for a second on which of two possible strategies to pursue:
a) if there is no sign of any 'bell attendents' he will rush across the remaining span as fast as he is safely able, with a mind to b) depending on how things unfold.
b) If he spies any movement there, he will wrap his wrists securely within the ropes of the bridge and prepare for a big swing.

Re: (064) Rustics & Heretics

There being nobody else anywhere in sight of the far side, Helmut gives the noisome bell only a glare before proceeding at the best pace he can make (in full mail hauberk and padded doublet over precarious footing, this is not especially hasty however).

| 1d6=1 So even wearing full-metal head gear, Helmut is not surprised... |

But within 10 yards of the edge see stops short, seeing the nearest "boulder"--a rocky pill some 5ft round--crack and expand, dust and grass tumbling off it as the thing pulls itself up into a stooped humanoid shape about 8ft tall and thrice as thick in the thews as any man. With the dirt and dust still billowing around it, the ugly thing turns toward the bridge 'til its beady little eyes fix upon Helmut.

"Well, well," it gravels as a broad, toothy grin splits its face below the horrificly bulbous nose. "Thinkin' o' usin' MOI bridge was we?"

Valron begins to cross the bridge, turning to Ashtad before he does so. "Keep you bow trained on that creature lass, if he tires anything funny let him have it."

"Your bridge then is it?", says Helmut, wondering just what form of abomination this rock-thing is.

Ashtad focuses now on aiding Helmut and Valorn, she stands away from the end of the bridge to get a true clear aim of an arrow at the creature. At the first sign of attack Ashtad will let the arrow fly at the boulder creature.

Re: (064) Rustics & Heretics

On the far side Valorn steps on the precarious structure, noting sourly that the hand holds were certainly not designed with dwarfs in mind. And that it's almost 50 yards across the ravine...

On the near side, Helmut is only 10 yards from the great stooped thug.

"Ioy like ta think sssso," it rattles in its baritone voice with a widening grin, then almost purrs as it lays a huge paw upon the nearest rope and gives it a bit of a shake. The whole bridge quails alarmingly in response, and Valorn and Helmet both have to grip the thing tightly to stay upright.

"And Io'll be likin' sumthink of a tribute, if ya like, fer the usin' of it. Whateva grub yer carryin' will do me nicely..."

"And a fine bridge it is", replies Helmut, eyes on the hand of the beast that rests on the rope suspending him over certain doom.

"Food you say? A fair tribute for passage say I. Allow me to join you on solid ground and you shall have the contents of my pack, though I warn you I carry no roasted pig."
