"With all my heart if it can be done safely," replies Josiane; "But we must be swift! Do you look to the rope and see if such a thing is possible."

She returns her attention to the shadows.

Questions flash through Armando's mind as he swiftly takes the simple looped harness in hand.

Will the rope bear two? Will the knot tying two lengths together hold? Will whomever is above be able to haul two together?

| All things in considered two at once is risky compared to one at a time, so I would dice for it. If I throw a 6 for the dungeon (on a six-sider), things will go awry... |

"Perhaps we have risked enough already — I ascend!" Armando sets the lantern down, tugs on the rope, and prepares to be hauled upwards into the darkness of the chute ...

Josiane swallows hard, returns her gaze to the shadows and hums her favourite hymn quietly to herself to sustain her until the rope returns...

Armando vanishes into the chute, leaving Josiane all alone... the nervous moments pass, with Josiane reciting a hymn to hold her nerve...

| Ref dices for the shadows' reaction to this now solitary figure in their demense... 2d6=4. Oh, how they despise the living! |

...Alas! The shadows are emboldened all of a sudden and flock toward her; as if all light were being extinguished from existence.

| Shadows move 9" so they can reach her within a single move. They come from all around, but mostly from the direction of the pillar. There will be no surprise, so what will Josiane do in the moments leading to, and following, combat being joined? |

If she can she'll try and Turn them again.

If not, she'll snatch up the lantern and hurl it onto the floor in the midst of them. She's not so much trying to hurt them as to make them fall back, trying to buy herself a little more time for the rope to descend.

Then back to the wall, fight defensively and pray to Almighty Thuul that rope is on its way back down!

"MAKE HASTE! I AM BESET!!"

Given that she's got her back to the stone how many can get at her at once?

| The rules are tacit on how many times a cleric can turn undead per day, but I think it is entirely fair that Josiane should get another go at it in this perilous battle of wills. Let the dice decide... |

Josiane punches the Enigma of Thuul into the air, all but shouting the Holy Ordinance at the blasphemous creatures, and their charge withers! Inspired by her success she assails them with a most forceful account of the Eucharist Liturgy in the Empyrean tongue, and they do shrink back and then flee from Thuul's verses!

| Josiane's second Turn attempt, requiring a throw of 6+: 2d6=8; success.
How many creatures are so turned away? 2d6=12! All of them! Nice rolls at an opportune moment... |

And finally after the danger is well past, the rope is lowered and Josiane is able to put her arms through the loops and be raised up and away from the Abysmal Pit.
