(062) The Basal

All those players who descend via crater stair arrive here; at the chapel's basal dungeon...

[p Man,mail+helm,sword,shield,9,16/16]Dieter[/p] (with a rope playing out behind him), followed by [pp Maiden,leather+helm,sword,torch,12,9/9]Josiane[/pp] with a guttering torch, and finally [p Dwarf,mail+helm,axe,shield,9,24/24]Dorgan[/p] descend the narrow, curling stair that initially circles the broad, roughly cylindrical hole in the bedrock, but then becomes an unguarded stair that descends the final 10ft or so through "empty air".

As they arrive below, [pp Maiden,leather+helm,sword,torch,12,9/9]Josiane[/pp]'s torch light illuminates a 80ft wide, squarish chamber hewed coarsely from the rock. It smells old, and [p Dwarf,mail+helm,axe,shield,9,24/24]Dorgan[/p] immediately forms the impression that this chamber predates the upper works by decades, if not centuries.

The floor is of mildly uneven natural stones with hardened dirt packed between them, but is relatively clean. There is a pile of rocks with barrows, buckets, and shovels near one wall and, opposite, is the only visible exit from the space: a single, open arched doorway near one of the room's corners.

What now..?

[p Dwarf,mail+helm,axe,shield,9,24/24]Dorgan[/p] will examine the floor, as close to the arched doorway as Josiane's light will allow, and see if he can determine anything about the traffic through this room.

Dorgan is a dwarf. Should I change the mouse-over text to reflect that?

Dieter will look all around the room before advancing. Once he's sure there are no other threats, he'll approach the arch in the corner. But he approaches obliquely, so that anything down that passage can't see him until he gets to the arch.

(OOC: Actually, I had imagined taking the rope off, but I forgot to say. So I'm going to let this stand; I like having a connection to the rest of the party.)

We should stay together," Josiane whispers earnestly; "Already two - er - three comrades have vanished in this defiled place. I am reminded all too much of our expedition into the Gottfried crypt."

She glances anxiously back up the stairs to see if the rest of the party is following...

[p Dwarf,mail+helm,axe,shield,9,24/24]Dorgan[/p] checks the floor and quickly--even in the dim light--ascertains that this chamber must be frequently used. It's blindingly obvious to him that the stone stair they've just descended is a recent (and scarcely serviceable, by dwarf standards) edition--probably barely a year old, and like as not built from those materials and tools heaped across the room.

Meanwhile [p Man,mail+helm,sword,shield,9,16/16]Dieter[/p] approaches the archway to the fullest extent the rope will allow him, which is about halfway from the stair to the arch. He doesn't spot or hear anything moving, other than his fellow adventurers as they all begin to descend the stair from above. The rope doesn't allow him any more slack thou--it's firmly anchored above.

[pp Maiden,leather+helm,sword,torch,12,9/9]Josiane[/pp] remains at the base of the stair with her torch (restricting [pp Man,robes,lantern,hand,12,9/9]Ulric[/pp]--and the others now descending--to the stair).

"This place smells horrible," sniffs Highbough as he descends the stairs behind Ulric.

But hardly as bad as the wretched stench of Hezmog! he mentally reminds himself...

Josiane moves aside to allow Ulric and the others to access the chamber.

Dieter backs up (to get some slack) and unties the rope from himself. Now others can use it, if they feel a need.

And if the stairs go, we have a way to get back up.

Then, untethered, he'll go check out the arch like he meant to do before.
