Re: (060) A Burglar About?

Desmond opens the door just a hair, and is rewarded by a subtle light--daylight, surely?--from the room beyond, and the sound of quietly retreating footsteps...

Desmond opens the door further and looks into the room.

He's just in time to spot the back of Armando leaving the room, and passing out into the courtyard beyond...

Re: (060) A Burglar About?

"Whew," Desmond whispers. "Looks like everyone is back in the abbey now."

He scans the room with a practiced eye for anything notable. If he finds nothing, then he leaves the way he came in, quietly closing the door behind him.

"Let's see what else we can find, shall we, Mondes? At least we can feel somewhat secure about what is behind us!"

Pausing at the privy door, Desmond will quietly peer in to make sure the faerie is gone. If she is, he'll snatch up the cage to examine later (and to offer as proof that he found a faerie in a privy).

Re: (060) A Burglar About?

After Armando is safely departed (and a bit more for good measure) Desmond/Mondes opens the door wide enough to have a peek inside; the moderately wide chamber appears to have been appropriated as "quarters" for some of the werewolves; there are piles of sacks and furs heaped along the far wall making sleeping pallets for four (doubtless leaping with fleas!), as well as another door opposite the one Desmond is looking thru.

Does he want to check the door opposite, or go back the way he came?

Not wanting to leave too many stones unturned, Desmond draws his sword and approaches the sleeping areas. Arm fully extended, he uses the tip of his sword to throw the sacks and blankets to the side and see if the werewolves slept upon anything of value.

| Aaah, searching the lair of the defeated foe for their treasure! Now we're talking... |

Despite the heavy musk of the werewolf bedding, Desmond (or is it Mondes?) still has a nose for treasure... and he has a tickle of it somewhere... here... aaah! His rummaging reveals two small sacks, each about two-thirds full of something with the clink and bulk of coins! And what's this...? Buried right at the back of the bedding is a little wooden box--about 3in long and 2in wide--and a heavy looking book wrapped in a sheaf of stained, black leather and tied shut with a leather cord.

Re: (060) A Burglar About?

Desmond grins quietly, "Tis basic treasure hunting, Mondes. They hides the treasure where they sleeps. Wonder why the Gooch didn't check these rags! We just seen him leaving, didn't we? He might not have the knackerin' for a sneak..."

"Ar, that's the stuff now, mate," Mondes whispers in a gruff voice. The sneaking duo sets the bags of coin aside for just a moment and address the other items. Sure that Wen or Ulrich or Highbough ("or whatever he's calling himself these days," Desmond mutters aloud) will have better use of the book, he stuffs it into his pack.

He gives the wooden box a cursory look-over for traps before opening it. "Too small to be a weapon. Let's hope it's a ring box with a magical ring in it the likes of Dieter's," Desmond whispers.

Assuming he finds no traps, he opens the box. Then they pull a few of the coins out of the two bags to examine them for worth.

Re: (060) A Burglar About?

The two sacks are mostly full of silver coins! Some are grubby, some are like new, but they're all worth the same, and it's a pretty little haul for a single burglar. The thought of splitting it a dozen ways takes some of the shine off it thou...

The box don't look trapped--it's too small for anything that clever--and with the simple catch put aside it springs open readily. Inside it's padded and lined with black velvet, and contains not one, but four! amazing gem stones, big as walnuts they are! The glamour of them is all but enchanting, and one of them in particular is more perfect and more beguiling than the others. Mondes gasps and Desmond's throat goes tight; the both of them realise immediately this one stone is worth a darn sight more than all the coin in those sacks put together...

Re: (060) A Burglar About?

After eyeing the gems a moment, with at least one set of eyes growing moist with tears, he says, "Well, the rest of the group will be happy to hear about our find - the two sacks of coin and the three gems and the book, that is..."

[...]

Mondes nods slowly, "Naw THAR's a proper sneak," with a slightly better appreciation of his noggin'd neighbor.

Not quite done with sneaking about just yet, Desmond stows the box with the three gems inside in his pack. Then they take the two bags of coin, tie them shut with a bit of the fishing line, and stow them against the wall with the door to the courtyard. They place the bags of coin nearest the door to where they would be behind the door when it is opened, and then cover them up with a nearby bit of refuse (using their sword to pick it up and move it over, to avoid the fleas), making it look like a discarded rag.

Then they will slip back out the way they came in, just to check on the faerie's cage. Desmond recalled it being silver and figures it might bring them a nice bit of coin, as well, as long as the faerie doesn't mind them taking it.

If it is there, and the faerie is gone, they'll take it, then go hide it next to the bags of coin, covering it with the bit of rag, as well.

Finally, they will listen at the other door, the one opposite the door they used to enter the werewolf den, and if they hear nothing, will open it and continue down the corridor.
