Olaf will also push, or pull, "The strongest should put their shoulders to the cart. Whoever is the least strong should keep a lookout."

"After a few minutes the lookouts can take over for one, or more, of us horses, and we can rotate the effort that way." Olaf says with a grunt as he gets behind a wheel and pushes, "If it starts getting dark, I'll light up the scepter. It gives off a very bright light."

All five Men are thick-limbed, but Andaros takes the first shift on watch. He pushes ahead in the rain and finds a vantage upon the rocky ridge that overlooks the adjacent valley and looks about.

He doesn't spot anyone (or anything) else in the gloom hereabouts.

Meanwhile, Dieter and Olaf push the cart along, while Boris and Victor pull it. Between the four of them they manage to make reasonable time and soon have the cart to the ledge, from where it must be lowered into the next gully.

This is a tricky business, but they decide to empty the cart rather than risk spilling everything over the ridge, and then with plenty of wet rope, they eventually manage to tie the cart and lower it down into the gully. Then is is a matter of forming a chain and passing all the goods from one Man to the next until it is all loaded again, down below.

It is hot work despite the poor weather, and all this take half an hour or so to achieve.

"Dusk will be upon us soon," observes Boris grimly, water dripping off his face and walrus mustache.

But he doesn't slacken his pace as he speaks.

The slog continues through rain and mud, and after a wet and miserable twenty minutes or so the light is beginning to fade from the last of the day, and Olaf is forced to stop and pull forth the illuminating scepter from his pack.

He utters the command worth, and a blue white glare shines from the stout implement. Rain drops a visible as they glimmer, rushing through the sphere of the new light.

"How much farther?" grumbles Victor, taking a moment to rest his aching back.

"Shouldn't be more than another half hour, I'd guess," says Andaros in his southern accent. He still seems to be enjoying the cold and the rain unnecessarily.

"A half hour?" mutters Boris, "Let's get on with it then!"

Olaf wedges the glaring scepter between the two chests on the cart, and gets back to his muddy shoving...

The half hour of merciless toil drags on to nearer an hour before the wet, cold, muddy and exhausted crew finally drag the acursed cart free of the last gully and onto the relatively flat land about the gatehouse.

It is a sullen, dark shape squatting in the rain and the dark, but they are all grateful to finally get into the black gate arch (out of the rain), and then come splashing into the little courtyard. It is dark and wet, without even moonlight or starlight, but they can smell a wood fire burning within, and see the yellow orange flicker of lights from within the mess hall.

All five most certainly deserve a good rest after their mighty effort!

It is after dark.

"Right!" Olaf says as he rubs his hands together, "That'll give us some light. Maybe we'll make better time now."

With a grunt, he puts his shoulder to the wheel and continues pushing, "Think about a warm, dry, floor and maybe even some hot food. If that doesn't encourage renewed effort, nothing will!"
