(056) Spirits of Wildwood

Highbough and Wen meet Gallaine before the moon reaches its zenith, and inform her of their desire to meet the woodlands spirits. She tells them that dawn will be the best time to meet the spirits; should they wish to be met, and tells them to meet her before the great watch-tree an hour before the sun rises...

So it is that in the pre-dawn still of day three, Highbough and Wen await Gallaine by the watch tree. Before long she emerges from the dark mist, now clad in a shirt of bright mail and a great grey-green travelling cloak, carrying a tall walking staff and and wearing a sinuous looking sword at her belt.

She acknowledges with a nod and says quietly, "There are many leagues to cover ere the sun rises, but today we travel by the swiftest route. Stand yourselves ready..." and with this she waves the tall staff and utters a few unknowable syllables... and all of a sudden there is a great assault of thrashing wind and your eyeballs have rolled back into your head! The moment of vertigo passes as instantly as it came on, and as your eyes right themselves you find your surroundings are completely changed! You are somewhere in a deep, dark, misty, wood. It is still night...

"That was the easy part..." says Gallaine with a quirky smile...

Re: (056) Spirits of Wildwood

ooc: Eerie Lambent & Infinitesimal Summons and as noted Wen casts the Eerie Lambent before we leave, before donning his armor.
Upon Gallaine word that she is ready to show us the way Wen would try something new. First he would cast he Eerie Lambent and gather the candles around his head, then he would don his new suit of Leather Armor and see if he can still control the magic. If so great we would set off with the strange crown of candles as an escort.
Wen is traveling light also...
Wen takes a light load armor, shield, sword, dagger + bow. Couple days of waybread, a few candles, 1 torch, tinderbox, the acid vial, scroll of Irascible Leer, waterskin, cloak, boats... Our plan is to run away and hide if it becomes too dangerous.

The jolt of the magical transport almost jars the knowledge of Detect Magic, Read Magic, and Sixth Sense from Highbough's memory! But he gathers his wits and recovers from his astonishment.

Re: (056) Spirits of Wildwood

Wen conjures his Eerie Lambent, and in the mist the slowly turning candle flames cast an eerie, greenish illumination indeed! While the little flames dance their slow, revolving dance about his head, Wen takes the time to done his leather carapace, and tighten all the straps while Highbough and Gallaine wait... somewhat impatiently it must be said.

When this is at last done Wen finds that although the enchanted candles continue to linger around his head and provide a ready illumination, they no longer seem to respond to his will.

"Let us get underway!" urges Gallaine, "We must reach the grove of the spirits before the break of day, else this whole trip will be for naught!"

She leads the way then, setting quite a pace, and the three of you weave a demanding path through the dense foliage in the misty near-dark. The wood is cool and fresh and you have a sense that the forest has eyes and intent, but there is nothing to be seen beyond mist and shadows...

Still Gallaine presses on, and you soon you are heading down, down, into to deep, cool, gully where you come upon an ancient, moss covered stone that is half-buried in creepers.

"We have arrived!" declares Gallaine, and unexpectedly sits herself down upon the ancient stone and dabs her brow. "Quite a walk that... but no matter, we're not over late."

Now the sense of being observed is palpable... the nape of your neck is tingling ridiculously, and your eyes are drawn without question to a pitch dark crevice that seems to hang impossibly in the thickest part of the dense undergrowth at the bottom of the grove. It's some kind of tunnel.

"If you wish to see the ancient spirits, then thru there you must go," says Galaine, indicating the awful, hungry blackness. "But do not dally overlong--the way to the spirit world will be gone ere dawn comes!"

Wen would nod... "Thank you for bringing us this far." He would then walk into the cave with his crown of little candles lighting the way.

Highbough hesitates if he should join Wen, or let the young Elf prove himself. He decides to tag along, and follows Wen into the cave.

Re: (056) Spirits of Wildwood

Wen boldly approaches the dark... place, first. His senses are tingling, and he is fully aware that something isn't right here. The nearer he gets the more certain he is that the blackness isn't natural dark, and the space it occupies isn't a tunnel at all. It is an impossible "absence" of anything. His candle light illuminates it not at all--nor anything beyond it. With another step, he realises there is a slight tugging sensation all around him--as if he were being drawn toward the nothingness. He is about to turn to warn Highbough, but as he does so there is a sudden and most violent force! He is sucked through the pores in his own skin, stretched, screaming, a thousand miles long across a place where all light is banished...

"eeeeeEEEEEEYYEAAAGHHHHHH!" The A G O N Y !!

...and arrives with a disoriented whump! exactly where he started.

Alone.

A dim sense of daylight filters greenly through the dense canopy of the grove. The "blackness" is gone, as are Highbough and Gallaine.

Re: (056) Spirits of Wildwood

Wen picks himself up and takes a look around... "hsst.. Highbough" he would call out.... When no one answers he would choose look out towards the forest away from the cave... Does it seem to be the same forest that he was just in? He would study the trees and plants carefully. If nothing seems out of the ordinary he would sit down for moment and open himself to feeling of the forest. He would take out his flute and play a gentle rain song in hopes of gently drawing some attention to himself.

Re: (056) Spirits of Wildwood

Wen contemplates his surrounds for a moment.

Everything is the same as before he stepped into the void, yet... different too. The light is, if anything, greener. The trees seem more... verdant, more urgent, and somehow more present. After a moment's consideration, Wen decides that this forest is now more dangerous than it was five minutes ago.

He begins to play a little tune on his pipe-flute, and lo! Almost immediately, Highbough appears! How he arrived Wen cannot say. One moment he was not there at all; the next he was!
