Desmond, Olaf, Koch, Gustave and Wibert are here.

"Oi've stubbed me toe!" declares Wibert, clutching the offending digit awkwardly. "You go ahead!" he waves the others past.

And so Desmond takes the lead, followed by Olaf with his bright light, and then Koch and Gustave.

Nidhogg and Andaros are left to defend the dormitories for now...

Now Desmond clambers his way down the narrow stair in the eerie blue-white light provided by Olaf.

The stair really is uncomfortably steep for a Halfling, but Desmond doesn't complain, and soon he finds he has rounded two or three bends and finds himself at a landing. The stair continues to descend into cool darkness, but here on this level a stone passageway leads a short distance to an intersection, where there is a closed door directly ahead, while open passages run to the left and to the right...

KOCH follows behind Desmond.

And continues down the left passage.
eris wrote:Olaf says, "Shhh!" and puts his ear to the closed door to listen. What does he hear?

Then he examines the closed door for how it may be opened. Is there a handle, a knob, an obvious lock or keyhole?

Olaf will do what is needed to check to see if the door is locked, but he isn't trying to open it right now, just whether it is locked or not.

If Desmond goes very far down that passage he's going to be in the dark, because Olaf and his light are back at the landing checking out the closed door.

IC: Desmond notices the light growing dim as he walks further away from the intersection, turns around, shrugs his shoulders, and walks back to wait and see what Olaf wants to do.
Professor P wrote:KOCH notices that Desmond is turning back and stands in place a moment thinking I need to stop following people aimlessly around this d**ned gatehouse.

He stands in place, removes his helmet and listens down the hall to determine if anyone is approaching or hiding in the shadows.

Wibert is remembering this place now. He holds his axe and shield ready for any trouble.

OOC: What does he recall is behind the door ahead? And in this passage?

Wibert comes forward and offers in a quite voice, "Olaf let me listen on the door and I will examine for any traps also."

Olaf leans the bright rod against the wall so that his hands are free to remove his helmet (can't hear a d**n thing otherwise), and then kneels down to listen at the door.

With all the whispering of Halfling family history and tramping of feet going on its hard to know if he has heard anything at all. But after a long moment of concentration, Olaf decides that all is quiet on the other side of the door...

The young fighting-Man replaces his helmet, and then takes up the Resplendent Scepter in order to shine its light directly over the door. It appears stout, but well worn. There is not much dust at all in the doorway, suggesting it has been used regularly. The thick wooden timbers of the door itself run vertically, and are bound by three separate inch-deep riveted iron bands.

There is a fist-sized iron door-knob in the usual place, carved crudely in the likeness of a lion's head, or something similar. This is set into a great riveted iron plate. Beneath the door knob is a one inch high slot -- presumably a key hole.

Olaf reaches out quietly and places his caloused right hand on the cool door-knob, and tries it... very slowly...

...he gives it half a very slow turn, and it seems to be right at the edge of its mechanism. CLICK. The door's bolt sounds ridiculously loud as it clicks open, but really it was hardly louder than the sound of Olaf's own breathing...

Wibert comes trotting down the stair to Olaf. This area was always off limits to the demi-Humans. Men only. So Wibert knows of it only by rumour -- down here was the gambling parlour.

He vaguely recalls (wisdom 6) that the gritty Men of Saxxon's band would occasionally remark that dancers, troubadours and other entertainers had graced the parlour in the past, but Wibert never saw any of these himself.

Meanwhile, a little way along the left passage, Koch too remove his helmet and listens intently...

(1d6)

The shadows grow deeper indeed beyond the light of Olaf's scepter, but Koch fancies he can see a kink in the passage ahead. He stares into for a time, listening, and allowing his eyes to adjust to the darkness... and then hears an echo. A distant clatter of chains or gears perhaps, followed by a resounding thud which all those present hear. It is distant -- but solid. A sound like an anvil dropped upon a massive flag of immovable stone.

After that there is silence once more...

KOCH dips his head in fear of being stuck in the gatehouse again. He whispers back to Desmond, "It certainly sounded like it. Let's hope that our companions caused the noise and not Saxxon's men."

KOCH quietly walks back to the others and whispers to Olaf, "We should search this room quickly, if at all, and then search around to make sure we are not surrounded by the enemy."
