Wibert carefully investigates the back wall where the chains and stuff are. He will check for traps and look for secret doors.

"I must admit that that particular evening left me with a similar feeling of ennui", he adds with still-heavy eyes, before grinning again in clearly enjoyable remeniscence, "but one that was much more agreeably arrived at."
"Interesting," replies Desmond, now with a smirky smile on his face, "it reminds ME of the time my older brothers dared me to hit a fat sleeping cow with a stick. Turned out it was neither fat nor sleeping, but bloated and dead." He pauses. "I ended up covered in... ugh. Took me a week to wash that stink off. And I woke up nauseated and went to bed nauseated, in the barn, that whole week..."

The nook with chains and manacles is on the right hand side wall as Wibert wanders deeper into the cellar. There is a musty stink of... Man-sweat about it. It smells as though someone was kept captive recently, but there is no sign of them now. The coarse walls are made of roughly shaped rocks and packed earth... they looks as solid as a mountain. Tugging gently at the chains makes them rattle ominously, but doesn't trigger any trap.

Highbough leaves the mess hall and goes back into the small courtyard, where Andaros is loitering.

The gatehouse is a simple affair, with two portcullis gates -- the front gate (by which most of the company entered the place) is raised, and the rear gate is lowered. There are no obvious mechanisms for raising or lowering these outside -- they must be somewhere within.

There are only two entrances into the buildings from the courtyard -- one leading into the dormitories, the other into the mess hall (from where Highbough has just come).

There is a ruined cart surrounded by a junk pile in the courtyard, near the mess-hall door.

There are stairs leading up to the rooftops (and from there the dubious catwalks between them) in three of the four corners of the gatehouse. The forth instead sports a chimney stack from the kitchen, which is presently releasing a modest little wisp of smoke which is quickly dispersed whenever the cool wind gusts.

Highbough will feel much more secure once the party controls the opening and closing of the portcullis. However, he dares not further split the party by going in search of its mechanism, so for now, he anxiously awaits the return of the others. To pass the time, he sifts through the junk pile next to the cart, looking for anything of utility or value.

Highbough shifts a few pieces of flotsam in the junk pile with the toe of his boot. Apparently it is the cast off pile of some truly wastrel Men... The old cart's timbers are nearly rotted through in places, and weeds almost waist high grow between the spokes of its one ruined wheel. Old weather stained timber crates might have held apples or arrows, who can tell? There is a wrecked tin bucket, rusty chain, broken hafts and axe handles, ruinous, lice infested padded jacks, bleached by the wan sun and riddled with beetle dung. There are old mutton shanks and goat trotters amid the mess, and other less identifiable parts of animal anatomy and other food straps, which all contribute to the heavy funk that hangs over the pile, amid the buzz of bloated flies. At least the rats have the decency to scurry deeper into the heap as Highbough inspects it distastefully...

Wibert has a final detailed look at the walls, and then the floor under the boxes of food. "Man there has to something good down here to find...", thinks the halfling.

Then if he finds nothing he will gather all the good food that can be eaten and take it up and out of the cellar, to cook lunch and dinner with. "The other should be back soon", mutters Wibert to himself, "must have a meal ready...".
