Meanwhile, at The Jolly Noose, Gustave and Caine part with a few silver shillings to lubricate negotiations with a company of thick limbed fellows in the protection racket who seem to be looking for contracts.

(1d6)

Most of the half dozen of so mercenaries are about to sign on with a merchant caravan to return to the interior of the Kingdom, but a couple of them seem ready for a change.

Boris and Fix are the names they go by. Boris is a bald-headed, barrel chested figure with a walrus mustache and a serious demeanor. Fix is instead lanky with scruffy blond hair and nervous eyes, but he seems quick and able, and to be the brains of the pair. Both Men boast grubby ringmail shirts and basic weaponry; spear and hand-axe. Boris also has a weighty mace at his belt, and Fix a long bladed dagger in a scabbard strapped to his left thigh.

"We'll sign on fer no less than 8 shillings a day plus grub," states Fix after a protracted round of elaborate negotiations with Gustave. This is substantially less than their initial ask of 2 crowns per day, but has cost 8 shillings in drinks to arrive at.

"But any funny business will cost ye extra," adds Boris.

(There are four other Mercenaries who could be goaded to join. If you want to hire any more than these two mercenaries, you'll have to pay 9 shillings per day each, including Boris and Fix.

There are also four lackeys hanging about looking for work. These are can be hired for 2 shillings per day.)

"We could purchase a small, two wheel cart, couple of mules, some sacks and saddle bags. Our suits of mail and large weapons could be hidden in sacks in the wagon. We'd also be able to cart more back without leaving equipment behind again. If we continue to use Ket as our base of operations, we may want to look into renting or even purchasing a small house or barn on the outskirts of the city. It would be easier than trying to sneak in and out of the gate over and over again."

Ulric will seek out the cartwright to commission the construction of the cart. He will then head out to the farms to find a couple of good mules to purchase, although he will wait until one or two others can accompany him.

OOC: Ulric currently has 49 silver to spend. I'm not sure what our final tab at the Plow will be.

"Good idea." Olaf says, "But if we leave town with a cart and mule we're sure to rouse more attention than if we just leave with a mule."

Olaf considers for a minute and then says, "Remember the farmer whose barn we spent the night in? He had an old, but serviceable cart. Perhaps we could persuade him to sell us his cart for the price of a new one. We could move our gear out of Ket over the next couple of days in sacks and bags storing it with the farmer. Then when we leave for real we have less on us. Once out in the country we move all our supplies onto the cart. Our farmer friend then takes our silvers for his cart and for storing some of our supplies in his barn, and goes back into Ket and buys himself a new cart."

"Perhaps the farmer could sell us a mule and hay or grain for it, as well." Olaf continues, "That way we look like we're leaving on a short outing instead of an expedition."

Olaf's plan seems to be a wise one despite his youthfulness, and it is agreed that it will be put into action.

Flewellen, Ulric and Padrig are still pre-occupied with their studies, and Gustave and Caine are busy recruiting mercenaries at the Jolly Noose. So Olaf and Mads (who has the fairest voice -- charisma 14) leave Ket as inconspicuously as they are able and trudge back down the muddly slope to the surrounding farmlands. It doesn't take them very long to identify famer Hubert's lodgings and the barn that most of the company spent a night in several days back. They head off to begin the negotiations...

It is midmorning as Olaf and Mads greet the farmer Hubert and his two sons, who are working at turning a muddy, fallow field with a petulant oxen afore a plow. They pause in their work as the two Men approach. The elder of farmer Hubert's lads is scarcely younger than Olaf, Mads notices.

"'Lo," says farmer Hubert, lifting his straw hat ever so slightly, "Wot kin we do fer you, eh?"

Mads charismatically explains the planned purchase of Hubert's cart and a mule, as the farmer listens on dubiously.

"In truth, the old cart serves me perfectly well, and I kin scarce spare the animal. I don't know what schemes you fellas are mixed up in, and like as not it's a better thing it stays that way." he explains pragmatically.

"But paaaaw!" compain his two boys immedately, and give an avalache of reasons why they should be allowed to get involved in whatever it is these adventurers are up to. But farmer Hubert is resolutely against his sons having anything further to do with it, and sends them both scurrying off to the farm house.

Mads tries to sweeten the deal for the farmer (1d6), and with some further charm and the coercion of a few additional pieces of silver, farmer Hubert eventually capitulates and allows the company to store their goods in one of his disused out sheds, way down in the back field, under the proviso that if anyone comes asking, he doesn't know a thing about it. Olaf and Mads agree to this condition readily.

The farmer's old cart is secured for 18 shillings, and will be left at the disused out shed for the company's use from the day after tomorrow. Hubert will also arrange for the purchase of a mule from one of his neighbours whom has such an animal to spare, for a sum of 22 silver shillings.

With the dealing all done (the 40 shillings being paid for in equal quarters by Mads, Olaf, Flewellen and Ulric), Olaf and Mads follow farmer Hubert's general wave of directions and hike down to the back field to survey the old out shed.

It takes near half an hour to reach it, trudging across muddy fields, and it turns out to be little more than a ramshackle old hay store. It is approximately half a dozen yards square, with no lock on the flimsy door which is secured by an old timber bar. The timber walls and flat-sloped roof are severely warped and weather worn, and it is by no means water-proof. But it is isolated and inconspicous. It will serve nicely.

Both Men return to Ket, satisfied that their job is done.

Some of the others can do all the leg-work whilst Ulric and Flewellen are busy with their studies.

Total stay of 5 days at 3 silver per day (all meals included) is 15 silver per person. Ulric, Flewellen and Padrig are excused as they are spending their time elsewhere.

Dieter secures the rations, and commissions the construction of the new cart for farmer Hubert. His sons pay for it and pick it up from the cartwright the day after tomorrow.

Everyone has purchased additional trail rations. I am assuming that 1 day of supplies can be salvaged from what you had remaining from your previous trek. Thus each PC now has enough trail rations for 8 days.

"Not a blockhouse, but it should do for what we want, Mads." Olaf says with a nod.

"I'll be happy to be on our way out of Ket." Olaf says as they near the gates, "I'm getting a bad feeling about things here."
