You all hastily exit the tower in favour of the courtyard, assisting the weakened Olaf and Dieter, and stand back to watch the chuffing blaze burn wildly and push up a column of ugly black smoke which is swiftly caught up in the swirling wind. No doubt the smoke will be visible for miles around.

Anwyn's suggestion to return to your former campsite will be difficult, for it is half a days march north, and neither Olaf nor Dieter are fit to travel far.

Fortunately, within a few minutes the fire dies down and with ten more you are able to return and inspect the damage. The former spider's lair is a blackened and bare. No sign remains of any web, nor eggs, and the corpses are now blackened heaps of grisly ash. The furniture, shutters, trapdoor and rafters are all seriously charred and still smouldering. A few little fires are still fizzling out among the timbers.

One thing is certain... the lair has been purged.

Mads the Fair

Mads looks around for a discrete location suitable to dispose of the contents of said room. "I think it would be best if we worked to manually clear out the burn refuse." The labor will be careful, using any available tools or implements, in order to avoid actually touching or triggering anything--and if possible, the refuse will be covered and buried with rocks to hide them from sight.

Dieter leans on his sword for support as the others examine the options for clearing out the blackened first floor.

Seemingly, you could either cart the ashes downstairs into the courtyard, or to cart them upstairs onto the roof, or to eject them through one of the now exposed arrow slits.

After a bit of poking about in the overgrown courtyard Mads decides that any chunked remains dumped out the arrow slit could be hidden among the other rubble rather easily. Given that you have no gear with which to otherwise move the rubbish, and that the latter option seems to be by far the least effort it is agreed upon.

Fortunately, Dieter had the foresight to bring a shovel -- perfect for the job at hand. Unfortunately, he is rather too weak to use it effectively, so Mads borrows the tool and begins to shovel the piles of gritty ash toward on the the now exposed arrow slit facing into the courtyard. Taines is able to help with the bigger lumps of char -- namely the burned remains of the spider corpse -- by physically shoving it toward the opening and hacking it up into smaller pieces with his axe.

When as much ash and char as can be easily moved has been ejected through the arrow slit, several industrious party members set about concealing the worst of it beneath piles of loose rock in the overgrown courtyard. By the time this is done several of you have worked up a sweat, and Taines in particular is black and filthy with charcoal.

It is late afternoon by the time the job is done and Taines is looking eagerly at the stair down into the dunjon...

The stair down is very narrow, only 2ft wide, so but a single file is possible. Taines intends to go first with his miner's lantern lit. Who is planning to follow, and in what order?
