Tongues of the Hinterlands

The Alignment Tongues
The alignment tongues are not automatically known. These tongues are primarily the purview of the Lawful and Chaotic Temples.

* Empyrean (the Lawful Tongue) is used for reading (Lawful) clerical spellbooks and scrolls, and for communicating within the temples of Law and with their agents.

* Stygian (the Chaotic Tongue) is used for reading (Chaotic) anti-clerical spellbooks and scrolls, and for communicating within the temples of Chaos and with their agents.


Native Languages
All PCs can speak Illiberal (also known as the Common Tongue) as well as their native racial or cultural tongue. The native Men (and women) of the Kingdom speak Gothic. The Elves speak Serayenon, and the Dwarfs speak Aurulgan.

Additional languages are determined randomly, within the character's alignment:

Fancy Names for Some Usual Tongues

* Illiberal is the Common Tongue across the Kingdom and is spoken by all PCs and many monsters too.
* Gothic is the native tongue of the Men of the Kingdom.
* Radjemian and Xanthem are tongues of foreign Men.
* Serayenon is spoken by the Elves,
* Aurulgan is spoken by the Dwarfs and other subterranean peoples,
* Lilliputian is spoken by the Hobbets.
