Mercenaries & Hirelings

The 3LBBs suggest that an outlay of 100-600 gp is required to attract any body of men-at-arms, including "non-fighters". It has been suggested, however, that the fee to attract hirelings was nearer 10-60 gp back in the day.

Thus, it will cost Hinterlands players 10-60 silver pieces to attract hirelings, including non-fighters and mercenaries. The exact fee will be five times the monthly fee of the hireling-type.

This expenditure will attract 2-16 Men, 2-12 Dwarfs or Elves, or 2-16 Orcs, adjusted by the player's loyalty adjustment due to charisma.

Thus, it would be necessary to spend 20 silver pieces to attract 2-16 footmen, or 40 silver pieces to attract 2-16 armored footmen.

Mercenaries must be paid a minimum of one month in advance. They must be fed in addition.

Footmen are local militia, citizen soldiers, watchmen, and the like equipped with padded armor or shield, and cudgels or staves, and daggers. They have -1 morale adjustment.

Armored footmen are regular soldiers equipped with mail armor, shield, and helm, and axes, maces, or spears, and daggers.

Archers or crossbowmen wear padded armor only, and carry horsebows or crossbows, respectively, and daggers.
