If the monks remain unaware of the PCs and the party-members attacked by the leeches look as if they can handle the threat, Biratlan will continue his attempt to ambush the monks.

Otherwise, he'll move to assist his party members, even if this spoils the surprise attack on the NPCs.
| The ambush isn't blown yet. The leeches are virtually silent so if there's to be any noise it will be made by the players. The men haven't seen anything yet either--they're way down the far end of a 30-40 yard long corridor (as far as you know; nobody has actually seen them since Potts left them behind a turn ago).

We'll all find out how the men react to any commotion--and whether the party can handle the leeches--after this upcoming turn is resolved. |

Re: [03] The Ziggurat

| Turn 3.8.2 is a combat turn.

The referee rules that missiles shall be loosed prior to contact: Magnus 1d20=14 (+1 medium range, -1 dexterity) hits AC8, 1d6=3 (+1 strength) 4 damage. Tumbly 1d20=2(+1 medium range, +1 dexterity, +3 halfling) misses AC8.

A leech has been hit so the referee is now required to determine their hit points; four lots of 2d6=4,6,7,10. The well fed one is clearly the alpha-leech. Using the Empire of the Petal Throne method of damage allocation, hit points always come off the weakest normal-types first and "carry over" to the next normal-type when one is slain. This method tends to dispatch minions quickly and also minimises the referee's record keeping ;)

Magnus has dealt 4 point of damage, which is enough to slay the least of the leeches. The remaining monsters have 6,7,10 hit points.

Then Vergas contacts them in melee. Having the advantage of reach, Vergas has the initiative in the first turn; 1d20=19 hits AC8, 1d6=4 damage. Not enough to slay a second leech, but they are reduced to 2,7,10 hit points.

Now Vergas alone is engaged in melee versus three leeches. Let us presume he had the good sense to attack one end of their line (rather than their center) so that only two of them can melee him this turn. Giant leeches are 2 HD monsters and Vergas is a normal-type, so if Leeches had normal attacks Vergas would be subject to four of them this turn. Fortunately for Vergas leeches have only a "special" attack that does no damage...

So then, two giant leeches attack Vergas; 2d20=6,2 both miss AC4. |

[p Man,plate+helm, sword, open hand,12,9/9]Magnus[/p] and [p Halfling,mail+helm,mace,shield,9,7/7]Tumbly[/p] opt to hurl missiles and then re-arm themselves with sword and mace, respectively, while [p Man,mail+helm,hammer,shield,9,6/6]Vergas[/p] charges boldy and [p Man,cloak,cat-stick,open hand,12,5/5]Urtzil[/p] hides. The remainder of the company hold their ambush positions in case the hooded men should come to investigate.

One leech dies upon [p Man,plate+helm, sword, open hand,12,9/9]Magnus[/p]' spear before [p Man,mail+helm,hammer,shield,9,6/6]Vergas[/p] meets them head on and teaches the vile things about the cold face of his hammer. The three stronger leeches remain, however.

What do you want to do for your next turn (3.8.3)?

| The leeches have suffered 25% losses but alas! 33% losses are required to force a morale check and unintelligent monsters need never check morale in any event.

Now there will have been some grunting, heavy footwork, and clattering of missiles and hammer blows which will have carried to the Snake-Cultists. The referee therefore rolls a reaction check to see how they will respond. 2d6=9, a positive reaction. So they will take affirmative action and come to investigate! Unarmoured, they will be able to move up to 120ft during the next combat turn... |

As they're unarmored, [pc Human, Fighter 1]Arcus[/pc] is hoping that the cultists can be dispatched quickly enough that he'll have time afterward to help out with the slugs. He's still waiting in ambush for an opportunity for a surprise attack.

Re: [03] The Ziggurat

[pc Human Cleric with Chain Shield Hammer,Level 1]Vergas[/pc] will try to reposition himself so only one leech can attack, but if that's not easily possible (or if he'd lose his attack that way) he'll just stand his ground. In any case, he'll try to land another blow. He also says, loudly, "Quick, take down these abominations!" to give the strange humanoids further reason to pay attention to the melee and not to his hidden brothers.
