Heroes in the Making

Character generation will be by the book (which is DD Ref Rules V3 Volume I; available to you here).

I will roll and sum three six-sided dice for each player seven times. The first six scores will be your ability scores, in the order they fell (strength, intelligence, wisdom, dexterity, constitution, charisma), and the seventh score (x10 gp) will be your starting purse.

* There is no trading or swapping of ability points by the DD rules.
* For the sake of expediency, only the core player races and classes (as described in the book) are allowed, but remember there are no ability score requirements for any race or for any class.
* Elves (and other potentially dual-classed characters) will be single-classed 1st level characters for the duration of this adventure. If they were to return to camp they could then become dual-classed, but that is likely beyond the scope of this game.

You can purchase anything listed in DD's equipment section from The Grey Hart's quartermaster. Any hirelings must be paid for a minimum of one month in advance.

Magic-users and clerics can purchase scrolls as part of their starting equipment. 1st level spell scrolls cost 100gp. 2nd level spell scrolls cost 200gp. I will randomly determine which spell is on each scroll.

See here for additional rulings.

Not too bad, at least I got a CON bonus. Looks like I'll be playing a good ol' Fighting Man.

Hey, in a brutal world like this, fighting men will always be required.

FWIW, you've got a missile adjustment due to dexterity too ;)

Re: Heroes in the Making

Vergas the Stout

Alright, I guess some god was very lucky rolling me up with 3d6:

Strength 13 (open doors 5-6, 75 lb/100 lb/150 lb/225 lb)
Intelligence 8 (2 languages: common and lawful)
Wisdom 16 (+10% xp)
Dexterity 13 (missiles +1 to hit)
Constitution 12 (90% shock survival)
Charisma 14 (6 retainers, loyalty +1)
Purse 120 gp

So of course I will have to play a cleric. Helps that I am not too smart, that way I won't doubt the teachings of my superiors in the order too much. Sadly I don't speak Theological Brogue which is certainly going to be a pain. I also don't quite understand how this guy will ever learn and cast spells, but not to worry since I can't cast anything at first level anyway.

Poison 11
Wands/Rays 12
Paralysis/Petrify 14
Breath Weapon 16
Spells 15

I assume the honorable DM will roll hit points? Turning undead will be as follows:

Skeleton 6
Zombie 8
Ghoul 10

Equipment

Backpack (4 gp, 30 lb capacity) containing
Spellbook (free, ? lb)
Iron rations, week (15 gp, 7 lb)
Tinderbox (2 gp, -)
Torches, six (1 gp, 5 lb)
Waterskin (1 gp, 5 lb)

Mail Armor (35 gp, 50 lb)
Shield (15 gp, 15 lb)
Helmet (10 gp, 5 lb)
Mace (6gp, 5 lb)
Sling (1 gp, 1 lb, 5"/10"/15")
Cross, wooden (5 gp, 1 lb)
Holy water (25 gp, 1 lb)

That's an AC 4 for Mail and Shield. Can't figure out sling bullets, are they free? I hope they are because I have no money left after this shopping spree. Can anyone spare 3 gp so I can have a cool cloak over my armor? I carry 97 pounds, so my movement rate is (barely) 9" per round.

So... Did I get anything wrong? Also, do you want me to come up with a god to worship?

Very good Ratikranger, well done.

The pendulum swings both ways, so my advice is to take it when you can get it ;)
ratikranger wrote:I also don't quite understand how this guy will ever learn and cast spells
The Brogue is only useful for reading spells from scrolls/books. If this were a longer term game, Vergas would still be able to memorise spells by meditation and prayer without it. Additionally, he might chance upon a spell or Helm (or other enchanted trinket) of Comprehend Languages, or be the beneficiary of a Wish, any of which could enable him to read the Brogue.
ratikranger wrote:I assume the honorable DM will roll hit points?
Yes indeed. In the interest of expediency I will be rolling all the dice. I will show you the results most of the time (seeing as it's a demo game and all).

A few other notes:
* Spell books will weigh 7 lb.
* Yes, sling stones are free but clerics are not permitted to use slings (they can throw hammers, however).
* Note that a hammer is 3 gp cheaper than a mace and can be thrown too.
ratikranger wrote:do you want me to come up with a god to worship?
No need; let's assume lawful clerics are of the medieval pseudo-Christian type and ultimately serve "Him". There can be myriad sub-ordinate patron Saints though; you're free to invent one of these if it pleases you.

You can post your character in the PC sub-forum whenever you're ready.

Good luck!

Re: Heroes in the Making

Very good aspiringlich :)

I note that Arcus would effectively have 1+3 HD (owing to his indomitable constitution), and that you don't carry a missile weapon (other than a spear) despite having high dexterity.

(I'd almost forgotten that, by the book, all armor weighs double what it should!)

You're ready to post Arcus over on the Player Characters sub forum.

Good luck!

Wisdom 8, purse 120 gp? More money than sense, LOL!

I guess I'll play a fighter. Do you want me to post a beta character sheet here?

Only if you want me to review it before you write it up for real. On the other hand, it may be useful for the others to see what you're building in terms of party balance.

For those who don't know: DuBeers wrote the original draft of the first ever Delving Deeper game! I think I still have a copy somewhere ;)
